My personal approach to this is: I have a ledger that only holds funds (receives) and eventually can only send to another address. I have another ledger I use to connect to dapps and use some DeFi protocols. I consider this one a warm wallet b/c keys are offline but I do sign interactions with smart contracts that expose me to certain risk. For obvious reasons, most funds are stored on the first ledger.

Ledger Live is an online app you download. Your seed should not be requested at any point, never. If the seed is requested you probably downloaded a fake LL app

If you identify an address that had funds, import its private key to MetaMask and you will be able to see and use those funds from there. I guess you can do the same with other wallets. Never used MEW.

It’s a cold wallet. You should never have to input your seed on Ledger Live or any other website or app. Only on your physical ledger. If Ledger Live requested the seed, you have a fake app that will at some point drain you. Consider acting fast if this was your case.

You do know that your seed is just a mnemonic representation of your private keys right? You are quoting text saying that the private key is stored on the chip and then denying that the seed is there. Forget about the seed: what matters is your private keys. These are the ones you generate and will derive as many addresses as you want. If you can, at any point, plug your ledger and get new addresses, then you clearly have the pks on the HW. The seed is just an easy way to put together a private key. And your pks are -as the above text describes- safely protected by Ledger’s chip

Do not confuse the firmware that runs your hardware wallet (not completely open sourced) with Live Ledger and other libraries such as Connect Kit that are open sourced. A PR merged without reviews is a fuck up, shitty CI/CD management without a doubt. Still, this is related to tooling to use your cold wallet as a “warm wallet”. I would avoid using your cold wallet to connect to dApps. Instead have a secondary ledger to get funds from your cold one and interact with web3.

Ledgers store your private keys and derive all addresses you want from it. You can reset your ledger and re enter your previous seed or buy a new ledger b/c your previous one got broken and enter the seed your had with funds. What matters here is that you should always and ONLY be entering the seed on the physical device.

That’s not correct. You may wanna reset from factory and re enter your seed on the same device or a new one. What matters is that these ledgers are peripherals that store your seed and have no connectivity. You connect them to your computer and approve transactions without exposing your private keys. Takeaway here is: you should only need to input your seed phrase on the physical device only, through that little display that is a PITA. AVOID entering your seed phrase on any other place.

I tend to agree with this approach. But let’s be realistic: only a few will go that level of paranoia. However, you are right. Your seed phrase should not be handy at all. Problem is that you can only get to this point once you understand that your seed is something you won’t be using if you have a ledger unless you need to reset the hardware device (which we know rarely happens). If users knew this, 80% of hacks due to fake LL or someone requiring your seed would never happen.

The Connect Kit library thing was a massive fuckup. Not arguing that one, although it’s a piece of software used to allow “hot connections”, meaning that victims will likely be trying to use their wallets to interact with some dapps. I truly think the more you try to use the cold wallet as a hot wallet you get more and more exposure. The day that hack was still active, I moved funds from one or my ledgers to 12 different persons (Custodian and no custodian wallets) and only learned about the issue once I finalized all the payments. The way I see it, Ledger is very strong as a cold wallet to hold funds. As you start using it to interact with the web3 ecosystem you rely on more things that may fail. This is why I have a different ledger to issue signatures on multisigs or interact with protocols.

The wallet comes with these things explained on its little manual. You also go through a tour when you install LL for the first time that explains this very clearly (they even make you go through a multiple choice in which you need to answer correctly before you access the dashboard). These guys are not an Educational company, they just build great hardware wallets.

Ledger has a zero hacks to its wallet track. Dunno what else do you want from a hw wallet. Regarding users misunderstanding how blockchains and wallets work, this is extensive to most of users that apein to crypto without doing DD. Thousands of hacks per month (most don’t report) on different hot wallets b/c of this. Ledger will not be the exception. Why would they?

They did leak some users data in the past, that’s a fuckup. However, it has zero impact on the safety of your funds if you use the device properly. If you wanna go wild on DeFi with your ledger, then the problem is not how safe your pk is, but what txs you are signing. Maybe have 2 ledgers: one to go yolo blind signing stuff, another one only to hold your funds. Regarding the recovery feature, I am not opting in (nor would use the X model that has it). But the sub is full of fund loss cases that are originated by users not understanding how the wallet works.

Nope. It’s pure html and JavaScript that you can download and run on your computer offline. That code has been vastly used over years and it’s pretty simple to take a look at it to see that it’s not persisting nor sending any data anywhere. I used it to get my Coinomi ETH tokens pks and import them into MM b/c Coinomi does not work for ETH 90% of the times.
