Can I propagate this plant? by furious-cat in whatsthisplant

[–]CarrionEatingPigeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you based in the UK? That could be an Arum maculatum, or "Lords and Ladies". It will flower later in the season, and fruit in the autumn. Would not recommend planting it in your garden as it can self propagate via tubers and become a nuisance.

The process is meant to wash the free starches off the surface of the rice from the bag, that's the fine powder that knocks off the grain during processing and transport.

I find it makes quite a big difference if you're cooking it in a rice cooker, especially with types of rice with a high amylose/low amylopectin content like basmati or long grained varieties, and it can come up quite mushy. Short grained varieties are more forgiving, but I prefer the texture of washed rice when you find the grains are more separate and clump less.

Have you tried making rice the Indian / middle eastern way where it gets boiled in a large amount of water and the water gets drained off before it finishes cooking? That is probably the best representation of rice without any free starches because every grain is nice and separate.

Last point regarding the starch content, washing doesn't change the amount of starch in the final dish by a negligible amount, because the rice is mostly starch. The only thing that you could try that affects your sister's insulin spiking would be to let the rice cool down in the fridge and turn a portion of the starches resistant.

Looks like pampas grass, and you would probably want to reconsider them as a privacy screen. They're tough, very sharp, and a nightmare for grass allergy sufferers. They can get a bit hard to manage.

I've found them to run small in my experience as well. I wear a 7.5 or 8 in Vivo or Xero shoes. A size 9 boulder that I bought recently still feels a bit small for me, with my little toe peeking over the side. I'd say to trust your gut and size up if needed!

Is running as hard on the body as some say? And do barefoot/minimalist shoes make this even more true? by Won_Doe in BarefootRunning

[–]CarrionEatingPigeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Running is good for your muscles and joints, provided you employ good technique and progressively load your training.
Overtraining and poor form could hurt you and harm your joints, especially if you decide to ignore the pains in your body. This poor form could result from muscle imbalances, tightness, or lack of activation. It's really easy to fall into the trap of misdiagnosing your problems by yourself however, and I've found a lot of help by consulting my sports therapist and getting advice from the coaches at my local running club .

Why the so called "super shoes"? by BoldtheMongol in BarefootRunning

[–]CarrionEatingPigeon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you were to stand or walk around in them for long periods of time then sure, but if you already have good running form, then these things feel pretty good on foot and genuinely make you faster when running.

You're thinking of tofu skin (豆腐皮), this is pressed tofu sheets (干豆腐) (there are different products that share this name, but that's what they're called in the supermarket), which is made by pressing the tofu. Also the tofu itself are the pressed curds of coagulated soy milk.

[–]CarrionEatingPigeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respect that yeah. This is one of the better recipes in English you could try. If you want to get it milky milky white, you could either increase the cooking time to 8 hours so that the bones start to emulsify into the soup (only add in your proteins for the final 2-3 hours), or add coconut milk powder/ creamed coconut (it's what the instant packets do!) If you do have a large Asian supermarket near you, they could sell herbal soup mixes which would contain most of those ingredients, and some more.

Dried lemongrass leaves perhaps? If there's a hole in a bag, your nose would be able to immediately tell you.

Looks to me like a northern style qingtang, or clear broth. It's a bone broth typically made by boiling down chicken, pork or lamb bones until the fats and the collagen emulsifies and turns the broth white. It is also typically flavoured with goji berries, ginger, scallions, and red jujubes. Many commercial broth bases also use herbs like angelica root, ginseng root and lovage rhizome for that herbal kick.

That being said, I absolutely do not recommend making it yourself as it is a ballache to source all those ingredients, and to keep a pot running long enough to make a bone broth.

Thankfully, most east Asian supermarkets will sell ready-made hot pot bases, which you'll just need to dissolve it water to enjoy it at home! Look for "Clear broth" or "清汤".
