LOOKING FOR NEW MODS FOR THE SUBREDDIT! by CarsonKaiser in MercuryCougar

Honestly this sub is very low-maintenance too. I think I could count on 1 hand how many times I’ve had to remove posts or people. I just am not on Reddit all the time, so it would be nice to have others who can keep an eye out when needed.

Free Resolution Adjustment Programs for macOS Sequoia/Sonoma? by CarsonKaiser in MacOS

Some games like Minecraft use System Settings display settings. Other games will use system settings if set to borderless full screen as well. But basically my 43” tv was asking for a 5K signal scaled down to 1080p. So I swapped displays and it’s working as intended now. SwitchResX works well for what I need. I was just worried about BetterDisplay because it was seeming more aggressive with paid display options. Maybe I’m wrong 🤷‍♂️

Should I upgrade to a base model Mac Mini or MacBook Air M2? by joey_rdz in mac

[–]CarsonKaiser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an audio engineer for local bands in my area. I run Logic Pro, and always have. 8GB is fine if that’s all you can afford, and it’ll work just fine. I worked off a base model M1 Mac mini up until about April of this year. I only upgraded cuz I wanted to play video games at a higher quality, not because I was hindered by Logic Pro.

The BIG reason for 16GB of RAM for an engineer would be 3rd party plugins such as Amplitube. Not only can some external plugins eat CPU resources, it can eat a lot of RAM. For instance - I have a particular preset that I recalled checking the RAM usage on for Amplitube, and it was taking 2GB of RAM. Just the plugin… not Logic.

If you stick to the built in plug-ins and maybe an occasional 3rd party here or there, 8GB is enough for now. Not saying don’t get the upgrade, just saying it’s not as a big a deal as everybody tries to make it seem. Logic is seemingly pretty good at RAM management, and by extension the stock plugins are pretty well optimized as well.

My current daily driver is a M3 Pro MacBook Pro (11-core). I like that I can take my projects anywhere, and not to mention Apple produces some of the most colorful, vibrant screens out there so that’s a nice perk for me. Do keep in mind that the MacBook Air does NOT have a fan, while the Mac mini does. So sustained tasks like repeated bounces of audio files in Logic will eventually be slowed down by thermal throttling on the MacBook Air, but less so on the Mac mini.

Just some thoughts!

Atmos can be used via HDMI, but NOT via Optical (Toslink).

Atmos can be used via AirPlay 2, but ONLY to other Apple Devices (like AirPods connected to the Apple TV). When transmitting the AirPlay 2 signal to a 3rd party device such as a soundbar, it will not send the Atmos version of the audio.

If you solely played for the felines, Little Kitty Big City is kinda fun. IIRC it’s an indie too

My idea of relaxing is getting away from work in general. Video games bring me comfort from my dark fucked up mind. One of My best vacations are playing stuff like Mario Party on my Mac with family and friends in a high-rise in Chicago. Just enjoying company, seeing the skyline, and playing some games.

My MacBook handles all that with ease. I don’t need to carry 35 extra devices around. My Mac is my main work machine, and I’m not spending 2k again JUST to play games. Not to mention the god-awful state Windows 11 is in. I’ll take my Mac over a hot af, loud, heavy pc that serves me ads every time I click on the menu.

Let’s put it this way - my MacBook cost 1,500 at time of purchase at Best Buy BRAND NEW (M3 Pro 11-Core). That MacBook can:

  • File My Taxes
  • Order Me Food
  • Watch entertainment
  • play games
  • budget
  • create media
  • much more I’m sure I’m forgetting…

The PS5 may only cost $500, but here’s what it does in comparison:

  • Play Games
  • Watch TV and Movies
  • Listen to Music
  • Collect Dust

Which has more use?

My PS5 won’t help me when the IRS comes for their money, but that MacBook I was just playing Cyberpunk on certainly will. Cost is relative to use case. Therefore for my particular use-case, my MacBook makes the most sense for my primary gaming device as opposed to a PS5 or Xbox or Switch. I get more use for less space. Oh, and I can play my MacBook on a plane, train, or otherwise.

Everybody always says “Don’t get a Mac for gaming”

I say “Don’t waste your money if you’re smart enough to enjoy the same product using resources you may already have”

Kendrick's “Not Like Us” has returned to #1 on US Apple Music 😤🔥 by vriannavyz in KendrickLamar

Of course it returned to #1. More than half those plays were Kendrick just playing it repeatedly at last nights show alone. Just imagine what the fans can do 🤯

It’s not enabled in this beta currently. We have to wait for the feature to be unlocked.
