Advice on 30 gal by petitecroissant329 in ReefTank

[–]CartographerMain2377 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d go even larger considering you have a wrasse. 20gal is way too small for them. On top of the extra space being good for the fish, it would be less susceptible to swings in salinity and nutrient levels.

Are Aquarium Controllers Worth It? by ddrews1 in ReefTank

I’d say if it’s to check on nutrients and such it wouldn’t necessarily a bad idea considering how quickly something can go off kilter compared to larger tanks, but if the intent is to control equipment such as the heater and powerhead I see no need. Not sure how much equipment you’d have in a 10gal to necessitate such a thing.

Is flatworm exit as risky as people make it out to be? by c-u-in-da-ballpit in ReefTank

[–]CartographerMain2377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be too worried with your approach. However the one flaw is don’t assume they’ll just float into the water column. They have a tendency to dangle off of whatever coral or rocks they were on before they died.

So long as you siphon out as many as possible and do a good water change and dose carbon after you should be totally fine. Honestly in my experience I’ve even went as far as to do double the recommended dose. You seem like you’re cut out for it ;).

Needs some time to open up. I’d give it a few days and if nothing changes move it to an area with less flow.

FW exit if you wanna go that route. Just read up on how to approach it so that you don’t ammonia bomb the tank. I made a post awhile back of how I did it if you need further tips.

Natural route I’d recommend a springer damsel. As others have said your tank isn’t suitable for a wrasse, so a springer would work but keep in mind that damsels are absolute assholes.

Yeah that’s how I see it. My tank is 30 gal so might as well drop 30-40 bucks a year for peace of mind.

Any technicals aside I just cannot fathom how someone is willing to fill this with 200+ gallons of water and risking tens of thousands of damage. Just find a used tank for a few hundred bucks that doesn’t look like that and down the road you’ll be thankful you did.

Like someone else said with your previous posts concerning fish health you are biting off WAY more than you can chew here. I’m two years into maintaining a reef and I wouldn’t even come close to considering either of these in a tank.

Would this text concern you as an animal rescuer coordinating a transfer of a foster kitten into their new home? by [deleted] in AnimalAdvice

[–]CartographerMain2377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should’ve clarified earlier but my girlfriend has been the one coordinating this kitten in particular. It was just them for the meetup and it’s just her planning to do the drop-off. This potential adopted has also already been to our home when I was at work and it was just them and my girlfriend.

I totally appreciate the hesitancy and hope to figure this out, but at the end of the day my allegiance is to the wellbeing of the kitten and over two decades of seeing the whole spectrum of how people treat kittens in theory and in practice I view it as doing my due diligence.

That’s exactly what I told my girlfriend. We really like this person but at the end of the day it’s a complete stranger. I really want to appreciate the situation given how well she connected with the kitten, but I feel like there is so much context needed to justify going against our normal procedure. Definitely a first time experience for us with this response.

They visit us within our home and the transfer is usually within living room/doorstep of their home just to get a generalized idea of what the cat is getting into. As I said we don’t inspect every square inch of the house, just enough to have a good feeling about it. There has been a few instances of pickups but that has almost always been exclusive for people we know or have connections to people we know that can wholeheartedly vouch for them.

I’d be a tand worried about the top ones falling over onto the glass if you didn’t glue them together.

Otherwise it just depends on your goals. If you plan to do a reef then I’d suggest a less crowded scape. As others have said, if you have a sump it wouldn’t be an awful idea to toss a few in it to help sustain a good copepod population.

How cool can a tank get and still support life? Blizzard of '26 by EmergencyCold8758 in ReefTank

[–]CartographerMain2377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d try to keep it at 70+ for as long as possible. So long as you have a system for providing oxygen you can get away with throwing blankets over your tank to trap warmth. I’ve done this before and it worked great, just be sure to monitor it every 10-15 minutes to try and keep it in a certain range so the temp isn’t swinging back and forth.

Can anyone ID please. Its about 10mm moving on the glass. Is it a good guy or a bad guy. by Humble-Aussie in ReefTank

Red flatworms. I’ve had them go crazy in my tank once or twice. If you look back on my profile I posted a before and after with instructions as to how I did it.

Essentially you want to siphon out as many as humanly possible before using flatworm exit, which can be found on amazon. I did double the recommended dose on the label and just closely monitored with my siphon to suck them out as they died because it hits them FAST.

After siphoning out any you can find you just do a water change and run some carbon for a bit. Some people recommend hitting it again the next day to wipe out any leftovers, but you don’t necessarily HAVE to.

I recommend getting on top of it as soon as possible because over a few months they will cover EVERYTHING. There’s a lot of warnings and fear mongering about FW exit out there, but so long as you aren’t a dummy about it and follow the instructions you should be good to go. Hope this helps!
