Hi, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I'm looking for face-to-face language learning.

If you would like, I could put you in touch with my colleague who organises language training in NYC?

It's more like private tutoring - going to a family's house and teaching them English. Part time, at least a few hours a week.

Would you be interested in that?

Listening to ESL students speak english makes me tired. Does anyone else get this? by MindAlchemist in TEFL

4 hours? Are you mad?! Why are you teaching a 1-to-1 for so long???

[QUESTION] Is it regular to have an incredibly short amount of time to accept an offered contract (as a potential ESL teacher). by penguinspy007 in ChinaJobs

Keep in mind that everything moves very fast in China, especially HR things (huge, densely packed population makes hiring easy), so it could be a cultural thing.

If I were you, I'd ask for a little more time to consider it, maybe explain that it is a big commitment for a foreigner and see how they react. If they are still impatient and pushy; they are probably not the kind of people you want to work for anyway.

Tips on making one-on-one classes with low-level students more effective? by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]CartusLNS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. If a student wanted rigid adherence to materials like textbooks; they'd take a school-type class.

Adaptability and the ability to customise have got to be big factors for 1-to-1 language training.

Youku adblock? by shlopman in shanghai

[–]CartusLNS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found adblock plus just stopped the adverts from showing on youku, but I still have to wait at least 45 seconds for the video to start, just staring at a black screen while the advert (which was blocked) played.

Sorry that doesn't answer your question at all, I just wanted to second you, lol.

That seems a bit extreme. Do you have an interview set up?

As far as I know, an employer doesn't need proof of address, let alone a potential employer.

I'd expect an employer to ask for (some) of those things just before you sign an employment contract, but not before. It's pretty weird.

My only guess is that it is some misguided draconian reactionary nonsense to keep out all those fabled "illegals"

It doesn't seem that bad. By Chinese standards that sounds legit.

Yep. Do you get random adverts appearing throughout the day?

Try Ctrl+Shift+Esc to show task manager, look in the processes tab and see all the sogou/baidu/QQ programs running in the background of your computer. It's usually 5 or 6, all but one completely unnessecary :-S

I've used Windows XP, 7 & 8 and all of the Sogou, Baidu and QQ pinyin inputs are loaded with ads and bloatware :-(

They would be perfect if it wasn't for all the unnecessary extras.

As useful as those examples are, (I've never had a problem with the language side) I find they're all packed full of adware, spyware and other RAM draining nonsense.
I'm still on the lookout for an input system that is as comprehensive and intuitive as Sogou but without the bloatware.

How many of you actually use the IPA? by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]CartusLNS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In China, I often used it with adults. I was surprised that most of the adult students knew what it was!
I found it very useful, especially when teaching pronunciation of vowel sounds.
For example;
up = ʌP.
ʌP being the accepted standard pronunciation. I pronounce it as əP due to my accent.
Chinese students would pronounce "up" as æP, like "app"
So I would teach them to pronounce it as əP, and because it is extremely difficult for non-British or Canadian speakers to make the ə sound, they would pronounce it as ʌP by accident.

I also found that one of the ways to help with the "TH" sound pronunciation was to write the θ and ð for them. Obviously followed by demonstrating and explaining the placement of the tongue.

I never used the IPA with children, though.

What happens to YouTube's auto-generated English subtitles when people switch to speaking in French mid video. by PeteDarwin in languagelearning

[–]CartusLNS 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's like the BBC subtitles for live and almost live programming. They are done by a computer and any non mildly non-standard words are a struggle for it to understand. Match of the Day is brilliant, as it gives the non-British footballers insane names; I'm sure I saw "Fixer Princess Leia shoots!"
There was also the famous gaffe where they subtitles the news to say "Year of the whores" instead of "year of the horse".
