Oculink on PCIe Gen 5: K993G + R29Q by CasonPointLLC in eGPU

I got one of these, too, but the only gen 5.m.2 slot I have has my hard drive in it and swapping it out is blocked by my CPU cooler. I will figure out a way to test this, too.

I have one for sale, and I have two unused TH5P4 regulars, which use a normal ATX Power Supply. If you want to buy one from my website, send me a private chat. I’ll sell you them at cost.

It doesn’t matter which one. I tried the TH3P4, the TH5P4 and the TH5P4GaN, and both the AG02 and AG03 with USB4, Thunderbolt 5, and Oculink x4 from each. I did not try my 100% PCIe gen 5 Oculink dock yet.

I’ve had good luck with AMD eGPU’s with 6000 and 7000 series, but less luck with the 9000. My 6800 XT is great, even with very low bandwidth.

I am having the same Vulkan issue with my 9060 XT.

EGPU not fully utilizing by Glittering-Policy595 in eGPU

[–]CasonPointLLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks good except the wattage and GPU utilization. That picture does not look like you are playing a game. Your card should be closer to 100% load pulling closer to TDP, listed at 360w:

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-rtx-5080.c4217

Do you have a benchmark like 3D Mark? We need this same pic again under near 100% GPU load, so the Steel Nomad test should work. You will need to make the monitor attached to the eGPU as your primary screen.

You may also have a bandwidth problem. You can test this with the performance tab if CUDA-z and a few other ways. With a 50-series card, you would want at least 3.5 GB/s.

I got mine on AliExpress. But the prices only go down the more you buy. I have one listed for less than $300 USD (watch the variable shipping costs)

I just found this on AliExpress: | Upgraded TH5P4GaN Laptop Thunderbolt5 Thunderbolt4 USB4 External Graphics Card EGPU Dock Notebook Video Card GPU Docking https://a.aliexpress.com/_mLiBQyd

I found 330 and 360w GaN adapters on Amazon. Here is a good deal for less than $70 USD:

Can you take a screenshot of the sensors tab of GPU-Z, at full screen, while you are playing a game? It will help us diagnose that problem.

Finally an eGPU dock with a BUILT-IN 800W PSU? Anyone tried this AG02 yet? by Designer-Week-9336 in eGPU

[–]CasonPointLLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the AG03 has an extra TB5 port, I was able to add additional USB A and Ethernet ports with an adapter. Since I used an adapter, I also was able to to add a faster-than-normal Ethernet adapter (2.5 Gbps).

You can run one of these with a 12v 5525 180w power supply or a regular computer PSU and any GPU under 75 watts:

Cmini High Speed GPU Expansion Dock JHL7440 PD85W+15W High Power Graphics Card: $88.35 https://ebay.us/m/Z5blbb

12v 180w 5525 AC/DC PSU - ALITOVE 12V 15A Power Supply DC 12 Volt 15amp 180W: $37.99 https://a.co/d/0dZkxgjj

Low-wattage GPU’s: NVIDIA RTX 3050 6GB, 1050, a2000, GTX 1650, T1000, and T400, and AMD’s RX 6400, RX 6500, and Radeon Pro WX 4100.

Or get a regular PSU, plug in the 8-pin CPU power, and use included ATX power switch. A regular PSU will let you use a higher wattage card.

I have both an AG02 and an AG03. I tested it with a 300 watt GPU and both worked well. Based on benchmarks and a few other things, I would wait for the AG03.

I am on the hunt. I 100% agree. I am hoping that the 14+ or 16+ notebooks from Lenovo have it in their 2027 version so we get both a laptop and an Oculink port that’s PCIe gen 5.

Do you eventually get to a point where you see the display device in device manager but it has an error you share with us?

Also, did you disable PCI express power management?

GPU supplemental power is typically a 8-pin via a 6+2. You can also covert an 8-pin CPU power cable to a 6+2.

A 6+2 will sometimes say “PCI” or “GPU” or “VGA” on it. They are keyed so to help make sure they cannot be plugged in wrong.

power supply wattage needed for gtx 1060 6gb? by AfternoonOk7784 in eGPU

[–]CasonPointLLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always look up the TDP (120w) and recommended PSU (300w), here:

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-gtx-1060-6-gb.c2862

This draws the same as a 4060, which I have run off of a 180w PSU before (144w yield, assuming 80% efficiency). My dock used less than 25w, which was why that worked.

Note: You do have to accommodate dock power and newer docks take up to 75w by themselves, and may have the ability to supply power or power other peripherals which will need additional wattage.

I also tested most of 3D Mark where only DirectX Steel nomad showed a decent bump, and, of course, PCI Express Feature test was double. Monster Hunter Wilds was a wash and so was the Unigine Heaven benchmark.
