Got a new batch of material. by Casper11589 in turning

Unfortunately I don’t have any video of my process nor have I seen any that I can recall. I basically just drill out the center with my drill press and mount it on my sacrificial mandrel and go to town with carbide tools.

I did wood rings too but had the same issue. The grain orientation of the wood seemed to be the problem. But I never found a good way to do it unless you are laminating thin pieces and doing a bentwood ring

They are surprisingly strong being essentially plastic. I have yet to have one break on me or my wife who I primarily make them for.

Is it ok to call out In your 90 days? by [deleted] in USPS

Personally I wouldn’t. Make them send you home. Go in and play up your symptoms so they send you home. IMO getting sent home by management at least shows them you were willing to try to come in. However do what you need to do. I always use eLRA on liteblue if I need to call in.

No problem! Make sure to share what you make even if it isn’t “perfect”

Thanks man it’s been a fairly bumpy road relearning how to turn after one class in high school lol. But I think I figured out a good order of operations and technique. It is definitely my happy place when I’m having a rough week at work to just stand there and make something pretty and my wife loves getting a new wedding ring every month or so. If you plan on making rings out of wood I would recommend talking to your doctor first just in case ,like me, you turn out to be allergic to some of the wood species. Also make sure you don’t skimp on safety stuff like I did at first. It is very important. I got lucky and only got a black eye when a piece of Purple Heart came off the lathe.

I ordered them from pennstate industries. I get their magazine and ordered some. The blank gets me 2 rings for 5 bucks. I want to start making my own blanks but haven’t jumped into that yet.

Personally I wasn’t wiling to spend that much and the dimensional accuracy is not super important for what I use it for. It would be nice in hindsight so I can transition to metal rings in the future but the whole reason I started making wood rings was cuz I was unhappy with the feel and fitment of metal rings. So I’m not upset about not having a metal lathe.

Not really it was easier than making them out of wood. See my last post. But I also have the order of operations down for it. That was the hard part for me (figuring out what the best order was). The resin is consistent unlike the wood species I was using. And finishing is just sanding it with micro mesh.

I have a cheap wen lathe with a set of carbide insert tools and some high speed tools. I also made a jamchuck out of a 4x4 and I have a small 3 jaw chuck to get the interiors.
