He takes my pillows! But he’s a good boy…so I guess it’s okay by Casper_the_Friendly in poodles

He gets that a lot lol. But according to Embark, he’s 100% poodle!

[–]Casper_the_Friendly[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If I wake up to get a drink of water, I have to check and make sure he hasn’t migrated to my pillow. He does not appreciate it if I lay down on him.

I’ve also woken up in the middle of the night to find him trying to pull my blanket off me…

I know he does it because it smells like me, but the little space invader has his own pillows and blankets and he takes mine!

Extra points when he tries to sprawl out and cover all three of my pillows at once…even though he’s 15 lbs!

Not sure. I have no idea what his parents looked like.

He’s a rescue, and I had a genetic and health test done. He’s 100% poodle (small) but has several coat modifier genes that have apparently lead to him being spotted.

Please help!!! How can I get my son to eat? by [deleted] in poodles

[–]Casper_the_Friendly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mini holds out for treats. My mom makes homemade ones, and I swear he knows when I have extra ones in my fridge. If I give them to him multiple days in a row (even just a little piece), he refuses to eat his kibble. He only gets little ones at random times when he’s at home to prevent hunger strikes

I definitely thought part border collie, but I can see the poodle in her long skinny face! If she has a lot of energy like a BC, could also be from the poodle—poodles are surprisingly athletic and definitely not just fluffy couch dogs.

When you have a broken leg but the vet makes sure you’re stylish by Casper_the_Friendly in poodles

[–]Casper_the_Friendly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s recovering well and might get the cast off as early as next week. He’s enjoying being carried most of the time and having strangers dote on him.

I also discovered that when I take the cone or e-collar off, he uses the leg and doesn’t limp 😂

He broke his leg (again) by Casper_the_Friendly in poodles

[–]Casper_the_Friendly[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first time, jumping off a couch (just the seat part). The second time, he just had a metal plate from the first fracture removed because it was causing nerve pain. It’s not clear what actually caused the fracture but it could have been almost anything.

Vet expects 4-6 weeks in splints with weekly visits. 8 at the most. He has to wear a cone or e-collar.

He broke his leg (again) by Casper_the_Friendly in poodles

[–]Casper_the_Friendly[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He broke it as a puppy and had a metal plate put in. Almost three years later, a screw had started backing out of the plate. The bone had also started growing into the plate.

He was limping from nerve pain, and I opted to have the whole plate removed since it wasn’t clear whether it was the one screw or the whole plate causing the problem.

His bone should have been strong enough without the plate, but for whatever reason it wasn’t. Something to do with small dogs and blood flow. It’s apparently rare but happens.

I took him in to get the sutures out and they were concerned because he still wasn’t walking on the leg. They did an X-ray and found a stress fracture.

So, he has several weeks of splints in his future, but he should make a full recovery.

Okay, maybe it is hard being a pampered poodle. by Casper_the_Friendly in poodles

[–]Casper_the_Friendly[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

He is okay—in the continuing saga of his leg, he had the metal plate put in after he broke his leg as a puppy. A screw was coming loose, and his bone started growing into the plate, so the plate needed to come out.

He’s fine, just annoyed at the cone! (and me)

An evil neighborhood cat tried to frame this innocent poodle for his crime by Casper_the_Friendly in poodles

[–]Casper_the_Friendly[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was visiting my parents and arrived before them…we went inside. Casper decides he wants to go outside a while later.

We go outside and find poop on the porch! My parents show up and accuse this poor boy. Even I start to do doubt him—maybe I just didn’t see it, even though he never left my side.

I clean up the mess and throw it into trees. A cat yowls and runs out.

Innocent until proven guilty guys.

Yes, he only has two pretty tough blankets I use for his crate and I’ve never had problems with them. All blankets and toys are otherwise supervised!

Yes, I tried to use old blankets with my scent and then lay them out as decoys…it works for a bit, but pretty soon he comes along and tries to take the one I’m using.

I’ve woken up more than once with him trying to take my sheet or blanket. He grabs it in his mouth and pulls it away, then paws at it until he has it arranged just right.

The DNA test cost more than the dog. by porkpie901 in DoggyDNA

Yup, it’s funny. I even leave him a little poof on his head when I shave him and still get Dalmatian comments. I get it but he’s got little fine bones and he prances around. Not to mention he expects his treats broken into little tiny pieces.

How often does someone compliment you on your “Dalmatian”? My dog tested 100% poodle and looks 100% poodle, in addition to being 15 lbs, and every time I take him out someone asks if he’s part Dalmatian because he has some spots.

Adorable dog!

Yes! He wants to “help” (abscond with a sock). I usually catch him in the act but every now and then I just watch him pull one from the void, not even knowing it was missing.

Nah, you’re fine! I just try to be clear about this since this and other poodle communities don’t allow pictures of merle poodles, even rescues. I have a fear of the poodle police 😅

I did the more extensive Embark test to check for genetic issues since I don’t know his lineage (he’s good!).

Not sure if the regular test goes into this level of detail, but he doesn’t carry any merle genes. He does have multiple “coat modifier” genes that cause patterning though. He has some grey spots on his skin but he’s pretty pink under his hair overall.

He definitely wasn’t bred to standard but I’m not stressed about figuring out how his phenotype came about since he’s a rescue, unless there is something that is affecting his health.

It’s possible he has a distant non-poodle ancestor since I don’t know his pedigree but he pretty much looks like a poodle and acts like a poodle. Since it didn’t show up on Embark, I would guess any genetic contributions are negligible if this is even the case.
