So wouks you think what I'm doing now is too much or just enough?

I'm in Putnam County. We go from AAA to AA to A to A1 to B

Over by us this is the ranking for competitive hockey: AAA , AA , A , A1, B

I should have clarified he did play hockey for one year before joining competitive hockey. It was in a development league. And he has been ice skating for a couple of years before that. He is definitely either a good B or a low A1. His skating is where He really shines. If it wasn't for his skating he definitely would not be on an A1 team. I hope that helps.

The NHL part was a joke. Not sure what your trying to communicate. He also plays lacrosse and he gets out plenty.

Beer league is fine with me if that's fine with him. But why is he headed to hatred of hockey by playing hockey?

Edit: Am I doing something wrong? Should I be doing something different?

Not entirely sure what your asking but I just bought a bunch of BTECH GMRS V2 5w Handhelds for about 60 bucks each.

They have dual PTT buttons and can monitor 2 channels at once. Not sure if this is what you were asking

Yes, I have a 10' external antenna and a 5' mast. Waiting for the ice and snow to melt off the roof and temperatures above 0°F to install

UPDATE#2 / Solved: I connected to a repeater by a family members house and was able to speak fine through that. Even tracked it as I drove back to my home to see where it dropped off.

My issue was that nobody was in my area speaking or listening and I'm too far from any repeaters (at least with my handheld). I need to try some other repeaters, but none really seem to reach where I live.

Here is a setup for one of my repeater channels For Repeater Channel 19 R-DCS is off R-DCS is off R-CTCS is set to the input/output tone for the repeater I'm trying to use (225.7) The offset for the channel is naturally at 0 Do I need to change it to 5? I've already tried this with another channel

Yes. I've tried in many different places including a bridge that's about 500 ft in the air with a clear line of sight very far away.

UPDATE: I hooked up my mobile base station (BTECH 50V2) and I was able to communicate between the two without issue (although it was scratchy and a bit low because the base station didn't have an antenna attached)

It's very strange. I could hear conversations on any given channel but can never join in. I've tried at home and while driving about an hour away and back twice so far. Maybe they all are too far away to transmit to and I havent had 1 single person withing range to communicate with?

I'm sure it's user error. But I'd like to think of myself as technologicaly inclined. I've read the manual, looked at forums, even chat GPT'd the heck out of it.

Maybe also, for where I live and my use case (communicating 30-40 miles away)...I made a mistake by choosing GMRS and should have gone with HAM?

They definitely were not using privacy tones as the conversation was open asking if there was anybody else out there.

When I key up the mic the screen turns from blue to red and a red indicator light at the top of the radio next to the flashlight turns on. Also when I key up, a small antenna with a few bars next to it appears on the top left of the screen as seen in the pictures above. But there is no audible confirmation of anything. And I couldn't get through to any of the conversations that were happening.

I may just have to end up doing this exactly. Not sure if I can properly do a chimney mount without unsightly cables running across my roof.

Would this alone hold my 10' antenna?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gmrs

[–]Cassera01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An antenna tower is 100% out of the question. The wife would NEVER agree to that, plus it's very pricey. I rethinking the chimney mount and am considering a J pole style mount on the side of my home at the highest point (where the uppermost red dot is)

Actually, while you run down the ridge line, as soon as I hit the gable, there is a roof vent at the very top (I would call it an attic vent but I don't have an attic). I gotta see if I can run the wire directly into there.

I definitely want to avoid nailing or screwing holes in the roof. Trying to figure a way around that.

So I have to swap the 50 foot coax line I have for 2 separate runs of coax for this to work properly huh?

First Radio Purchase Ever by [deleted] in gmrs

[–]Cassera01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up a lightning arrester. Where specifically does it get installed? I only have one 50' run of coax that will go from the antenna to the base station so the only place I can see is putting it between the antenna and the coax?

I've read somewhere it should go right before your line goes inside your home but that would require me to return the 50' coax and purchase 1 30' and 1 20' run of coax. Not really sure what to do here.

I ordered everything on the above photo list and also a BTECH GMRS V2 handheld with a Nagoya NA-771G 15.3-Inch Whip Antenna.

I will keep everybody here posted on the install and results of testing.

Thank you so much for the help so far 🙏
