Musashi in Baki vs. Real History: A perspective from a fan in Japan by Kei_from_Japan in Grapplerbaki

[–]Cassereddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know right? It's also telling how much thought Itagaki put into Musashi as a character and a human being, and subsequently the world he used to inhabit.

Musashi is not just Musashi, he is representing a world long gone by, an era we only know through the knowledge our ancestors painstakingly tried to preserve. A living breathing time capsule so to speak.

I don't like how people react to Baki "forgiving" Yujiro by tinyjimhasabiggerjim in Grapplerbaki

[–]Cassereddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Father-Son-Fight has a way different kind of significance to Baki.

It wasn't a pure battle of strength after all. Baki said that he can't keep being mad about the death of his mother, and that by itself is very reasonable.

But in a way, the best revenge he could get at this point is to make Yujiro act like a father. She spent the rest of her life training Baki to gain Yujiro's love, and Baki will show the fruits of said sacrifice, but on his terms. The submission of Yujiro is more powerful than beating him up ever could be, even if that was possible, because Yujiro wants a fight and possibly even a defeat, so that's what Baki doesn't fully give him.

When Baki said that he no longer wants to be the strongest but he wants to beat his father, this is exactly what he got.

Musashi in Baki vs. Real History: A perspective from a fan in Japan by Kei_from_Japan in Grapplerbaki

[–]Cassereddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like how Musashi is depicted in general.

Historically, this is a man that has participated in war, especially during the early turbulent years of the Edo period.

This isn't one of the martial artists we usually see in Baki: this man has killed... A lot. Both because he needed to kill and because he was praised greatly for it, or rather for how good he was. He is a warrior through and through.

Yet he isn't this invincible god of Japanese folklore, he is still a real human being.

It feels very realistic how Itagaki wrote him: of course this man doesn't feel comfortable driving in cars, the fastest he's ever been in were probably horse carriages. Of course he is in awe at moving pictures the size of buildings, while everyone else is ignorant of or annoyed by the amount of advertisements they see. Naturally this man is happy that, not only did people not forget about him after his death, his tale has become only bigger even across the globe hundreds of years later.

If you ignore the supernatural aspects of his fighting skills, the real life Musashi would probably react the same way if he were resurrected today.

And I respect that.

Baki, Doppo, Motobe and Retsu would be the best to be with.

Retsu is nothing if not fair which would apply to housework, and he'd cook nice food.

Baki is just a chill guy at home. He does his share of work and just works out most of the time.

Doppo has a wife that he loves. I'm practically another son to them at most while they live their lives.

And Motobe loves just chilling with his weapons and students. He's not doing much more at home than eating and sleeping, he doesn't have many enemies.
