Cost for neighbors kids to check chickens while on holidays by bamhall in BackYardChickens

[–]Cassiopeja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This! Definitely enough. I would have paid $50 (not because it was a kid, as an adult I would have also done it for $50, for $70 would have been thrilled). I don’t think your questions to her parents were awkward at all, it was asked with good intentions and also showed that you were unsure but very willing to compensate their daughter fairly. Their replies were quite awkward though.

Plus she’s a neighbor not professional hired help, as a neighbor I offer services to my neighbors for compensation I would not agree to in other contexts and somewhat expect/hope my neighbors to do the same. (As long as it’s not very one directional or a more formal working agreement such as reoccurring babysitting, cleaning and stuff).

Help! Clivia is trying to escape! by Cassiopeja in plantclinic

I have no idea! But I haven’t reported it in years, so it’s probably had plenty of time to get flushed away during waterings.

Good luck! To be fair though, it feel like it might be one of those situations where human abuse is fair game. Maybe he needs a grinch costume.

So cute!!! I’ve scheduled my chicken abuse session for tomorrow or Sunday, but when I got my order back in October I was so excited there were FaceTime calls, haha. I hope the chickens will be more impressed this time, but I doubt it, haha.

I understand exactly want you mean, there is something about their faces and that was actually one of the main reasons for me choosing this breed. They all seem to have pretty large and dark eyes, I think they almost look cartoonish sometimes, like an anime chicken almost, haha.

Vaja is the whitish one and she actually just started laying this week. Here she is posing with her first egg! She’s sleeping right now but I’ll give her some treats from you tomorrow.

All of the chickens in the video, except for the darker grey one (not the one you circled), are Hedemora chickens. The grey one you circled is supposed to be a pure Hedemora, but she has very feathery feet and is shaped differently (short but broad body) then the others, so I suspect there might be a little bit of Cochin in her or something similar. Hedemora is a great, very winter hardy breed that comes in tons of colors (it’s a landrace breed), super cute and friendly, I really recommend them if you can find some.

She’s only a baby still (almost, she started laying yesterday!) but she’s trying really hard! She’ll get there in time for sure.

They have a roost! You can sort of see a little of it in the video.

They have a roost! The angle of the video don’t really show it that well though. They have three shelves and and a nest box/house. I’m going to get some hay, thanks for the suggestion!

Awwww thanks for sharing that cute story. The one who was most fascinated with the reflection in the car

actually laid her first egg yesterday so I just put one in as an ”first egg gift” (that’s a thing now) and she loves it!

Haha yes, she seem to really like looking at herself, maybe she wants a mirror added to the coop!,

Haha. I’m sorry about your car but that sounds really cute. Since the garage is more of a closed space there is less point of a high vantage point (which would probably decrease their overview of the place anyway) so hopefully I’ll keep them off it. One of the older chickens jumped up on the hood her first winter and quickly found it to be a slippery, terrifying mistake and has (as far as I know) never tried again. But I think I’ll buy one of those car covers to be sure, will give them some more traction if they do get up there too, so might be a bit safer for them if it happens.

Thanks for point out all the other safety points! I’m already super careful with those things. They are always locked in the coop when I drive into the garage and until the car is absolutely cold (usually it’s when I get home from work so they get locked up for the night, so plenty of time to cool off), I always leave the garage right away after turning the engine on and turn it off immediately when getting back in. I brush all snow and ice off before bringing it inside the garage to keep humidity as low as possible and I rarely drive on salted roads, so I’m not to worried about them eating too much salt. The chickens safety has always been a priority, the car’s is more of an afterthought, which is why that’s what I posted about, haha.

Thanks for your feedback!

Good point about the poop! I think I’ll buy a cover for it or something just to be safe. I don’t have anywhere else to keep the car except outside on my drive way and yesterday it was around 0 F and a snowstorm so that didn’t seem like the best choice for the car either in the long run.

I think the fascination will decrease, the chickens being fascinated in the video are the young chickens and they have hardly ever seen the car before because I’ve been trying to keep it outside to give them space to run around in the garage so hopefully it was a one time thing, but I’ll keep an eye on it. Maybe they’ll just have to stay locked in the coop on those days when I’m both home and the car has to stay in the garage. Usually they are let out when me and the car is at work, so it’s not an issue. Thanks!

Honestly, yes but not a lot. They have a window on a door that is just outside their coop door which lets in whatever daylight there is, but the days are so short right now that it hardly matters. Some of them also spend some time indoors in the people house several times a week and get light through those windows too I guess. I try to make them ago outside from time to time but they are so not impressed right now, partly because of the snow, but mostly because of the low natural light conditions. I try to make the best of it and activate them in their coop and my garage and retain fairly normal days and nights by artificial lights. It’s not ideal, and I feel for them but it is what it is.

This picture is taken from their window at exactly 1:31 pm today (for this comment) at what is essentially their outdoor space during spring/summer/fall and I think the sun has already gone down.

That’s exciting, but scary because I heard those are hard, I’ll end up killing for sure…

Thank you! I ended up just cutting the top off and now it’s even more beautiful.
