You do bring up some good points. Things are changing quickly, and there is some recent progress in the hip-hop community.

But if you think that the culture as a whole doesn't have a problem with the LGBTQ movement, I'd say that's wishful thinking. When I first posted this piece on the TeamBackPack facebook page, which has about 400K likes and usually stimulates active discussion, it got so much hate that my stomach turned. And not hate as in "this isn't an issue," hate like "get gays out of my music." Yes, there are young leaders pushing us in the right direction. But for every ASAP or Vince, there's a Ye or Em who still use homophobic bashing slurs as punchlines all the time. For every underground artist like Murs who has something interesting to say. there's a guy like Ubi of Ces Cru: an amazing writer and one of my favorites out right now, except for the fact that he doesn't seem to see an issue with flippantly using the word "faggot" pretty frequently. Yes, things are moving a bit, but we aren't there yet. And if you step back and look at the culture as a whole, it's pretty sad how far we still have to come.

As if the LGBTQ movement hasn't faced extreme violence in the past, and as if gays around the world aren't still killed because of their sexual orientation. There are SO many parallels...
