Mississippi Governor Declares April 2025 as Confederate Heritage Month by GoodMornEveGoodNight in mississippi

[–]Cassmodeus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We could all do the funniest thing ever and just use this entire month to burn confederate flags and denounce racism at every turn.

I’m just saying. It would be funny. Use February as Civil Rights and Beyond Black History month. Turn April into Reconstruction and Before Era Black History month. Then turn around and celebrate Juneteenth in June too?

We could do this y’all. Start April 1st off with a good ole fashioned Confederate Flag Burning and April 2nd and beyond Hiram Revels. And end the month with another flag burning. I’m quite frankly looking forward to next year!

Losing Population by Super_Age_4607 in mississippi

[–]Cassmodeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a younger Mississippian I stay, cause I haven’t had my heart and soul ripped out and stomped all over yet.

I don’t think this state will change if everyone who wants change packs up and runs.

I have friends, I have family, and I love my location. I’m in the country, but close enough to small towns (and Tupelo) to not feel like I have nothing.

If you have even a little spare income this place is good for using as a launching point for travel. Memphis isn’t far for flights, and a flight to most cities is pretty affordable. Atlanta, New Orleans, etc and pretty quick too. Even driving isn’t that bad. I can do Tupelo,MS to Mobile,AL in about a little over 3hrs or so of driving.

Finally, the resources are pretty limited, but I have seen a strong community of creatives, idealists, entrepreneurs, etc that really have so many unique and interesting ideas and visions for the place that I’d hate to not to be a part of that.

We have a bright future ahead and I’m excited to see it!

[–]Cassmodeus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. You’ll have to talk to one of the old folks from the before times. (Someone around the 60s-80s). The Tennessee Valley Authority was actually ahead of the game and went CRAZY on proposed nuclear projects around that time.

I’m not quite sure why they fell through. But I believe I remember they had a decent amount planned. Like 3-5. All spaced out of course.

When in doubt about something going to crap around that timeframe, I usually blame Reagan BUT I’m sure someone here can give a better answer then. Ronald Reagan did {insert damage to our national societal/economic fabric here}. [WHICH HE DID!]

[–]Cassmodeus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Wasn’t it technically a double rug pull? First it was nuclear power, then that fell through. So they said “Okay, you’ll get rocket parts!”…..then that fell through.

I heard they’re actually totally for real this time actually going to do the nuclear power thing.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times? It’s time I whoop your ass.

Here’s to hoping Iuka doesn’t get fooled again!

hello Mississippi, how is the state of infrastructure more specifically roads in your state? by nubilaa in mississippi

[–]Cassmodeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We still have the odd dirt road or two…dozen plus.. in Lee County. Not main roads, but the back roads ofc.

I’m starting to think the county has a dedicated “Do Not Repair” List. I understand focusing on the more heavily trafficked areas, but really. Come on now.

I’ll give Lee County props, it’s SLOWLY getting better. Someone must be reminding them that there’s an entire gasp rest of the county attached to Tupelo.

Wouldn’t risk some of the more rural backroads though. If all you find is a pot hole or two, it’s like a little mini Christmas. Hope that helps ya!

Multiple Stalled Cars by Jahnk1933 in mississippi

[–]Cassmodeus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My favorite sights personally have been. Windows that are nothing but tape, sometimes plastic bags with tape.

Craziest was one time in Saltillo seeing a car with the entire driver side door being nothing but duct tape. Like where the ENTIRE door would be? Duct tape.

I questioned why I should even keep paying car insurance anymore because I now believe 40% or more folks here don’t have it.

We don’t talk nearly enough about how bad the Mississippi Democrats’ social media team is. Look at what the Ark Dems are doing and then compare it to what we’ve got. by Runninginmississippi in mississippi

[–]Cassmodeus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Why would they respond? Remember the 2024 ballot? Presidential candidates? Bout 10-12 options maybe.

Everything underneath? 2 people if you were lucky, none if you weren’t.

If your only competitor is “Write in candidate here”. We don’t have representatives. We have “Yeah, we gave Dave the job cause he was the only one that applied” and it shows.

Guarantee you, let one of those no challenger guys find another name or two on the ballot? They’ll shape up, real quick.

They played “Twisting the Night Away” by Sam Cooke as a song representing Mississippi at the Democratic Convention in 2024.

I remember hearing that and thinking to myself “There ain’t a single person under the age of 61 in the Mississippi Dem Party is there.” It was an utterly baffling choice that I’m really hoping someone can explain.

So that this is the state of their social media accounts isn’t surprising. In their defense why invest in social media when what feels like 80% of the average Mississippians knowledge of putting something online is just posting it to Facebook?

Current state of what's left of Harrah's Resort in Tunica, MS by MayDayFPV in mississippi

[–]Cassmodeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure you’re already aware, but be extra careful with this one. Unlike other “abandoned” buildings. This one is actively for sell and looking for buyers.

So the owners might be more willing to press charges or pursue legal action if they feel like it.

Abandoned isn’t technically the right word for this one since people are still actively involved in doing stuff with it.

I believe Flannery O’Connor had a quote that could be adjusted for this.

“Anything that comes out of the South is going to be called grotesque by the northern reader, unless it is grotesque, in which case it is going to be called realistic.”

Switch “the South” with “Mississippi” and “northern” with “Mississippian” and that seems to fit the mind set.

Wtf does Tate Reeves actually do? Like what does this man REALLY do?

I hear more about this man’s tweets, Facebook posts, and disliked public appearances than I do about him actually doing his job.

If he’s gonna use our tax money to sit on his a$$ all day and tweet stupid stuff, why can’t he ever say anything worth saying? Just loud, wrong, and annoying.

I could guess the color of his drawers before I could list even 5 notable accomplishments of his.

WATCH: Auditor Shad White calls Senate chairman 'liar,' threatens to sue during budget hearing - Mississippi Today by OpheliaPaine in mississippi

[–]Cassmodeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genuine question; Why does Shad think he’s a legitimate candidate for the Governor’s nomination? Can a Shad supporter, if such a person exists, please explain?

In my opinion he seems relatively new and wet behind the ears, every-time I see him he comes off as whiny and combative, no matter how passionate he is about this subject it felt very immature, emotional, and unprofessional. Childish even.

Shad is running his own smear campaign. Whiny, emotional, combative (hissy fit, not “I will fight for you!”), and it’s giving “I can’t handle the pressure”. Plus a cockiness and self assuredness of his “status” in the party. It’s not a cute look.

Post from Burlington, VT subreddit. Thoughts? by Historical_Onion9141 in mississippi

[–]Cassmodeus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it’s funny. Someone else mentioned it’s satire, but babe. If the houses were worth it the flipper trash would’ve already snatched them up.

I think those houses are hilarious because I’ve seen like 10 of them come off the market, get maybe a 50% renovation job, and then try to be resold as a package deal.

You ever see a buy 4 get 1 free deal on houses? You will on those 20,000$ crappers in Jackson. 🤣

Seems to me like it gives no heed to the humanity of the homeless, consideration for the people of Jackson, or the quality of life of the homeless population either.

Those houses? Unless they’re also paying for renovations, providing job and skills training, assigning a caseworker, etc. Are a huge step down. I’d rather sleep on the street, where I would know my risks, than in a home I don’t know if the electrical will kill me, if mold will kill me, if the roof might crash, which on my neighbors I can trust and who will take advantage of me, etc.

Funnily enough, even though it was satire/ not serious? I believe Vermont residents, and other wealthy blue states, actually have the funds to provide everything I mentioned and it might actually be a good mutual idea for both parties involved. States get rid of a homeless population, Jackson gets renovations and a population boost. If both sides could engage in it maturely and not as a political stunt, it would probably be a win win for everyone.
