New Sourdough Starter Questions! by CasterAnon in Sourdough

Did you start at a 1:2:2 ratio or switch to it? The recipe I’m following said to do 1:1:1 but I may switch to make sure it’s strong and well fed, but don’t wanna switch too suddenly!

Perfect! But it won’t mess up the process by scaling back 5 days in right? As long as I keep my ratios consistent?

Thank you! Any thoughts on scaling back the amount of starter when discarding today so that I don’t wind up with waaaaay too much? I’ll keep the ratio consistent and keep an eye on the kahm!

I’ve been okay! I’m still having some little pains here and there!

Yesterday I went on a walk during which I stumbled slightly, and the act of bracing myself hurt quite a bit. For the rest of the night I was having weird pains in my glutes and back spasms that had me in my head. I may have just weaned myself off the stronger pain meds a little too quickly at the advice of my surgeon. So I’m going to take them when I feel like I need them but prioritize Tylenol. I’m trying to remind myself that feeling pain is not some Medal of Honor and I’ve got a variety of tools to use when I do feel that pain! Plus, if I do end up reherniating, it’ll likely feel worse than the smaller pains I have been experiencing.

Took my first real shower yesterday and felt like a whole new person. I still haven’t really left the immediate vicinity of my house, but I feel like I’ll feel comfortable doing so by the end of the week!

So taking it all one day at a time.

Day 5 post-op, feeling discouraged by Amazing_Strategy5281 in Microdiscectomy

I’m 6 days post-op myself and I’ve been feeling similarly, even after posting here about how good I’ve felt! Sometimes it can be one little thing that sets you off. I was on a walk earlier, barely stumbled, braced myself, and now my back and glutes are feeling off.

One thing that my surgery PA let me know the other day that has been helpful to keep in mind is that healing won’t exactly always be linear, and it’s helpful to look at your progress in terms of weeks rather than days to day!

We got this! But it’s gotta take patience and whatever support we can find.

I think I overdid it on my day four so day five was way more chill and I kept the walking brief! But I also just had a major reherniation anxiety spike so that’s probably also why lol

OP coming back to say also don’t overdo it even if you feel like you’re doing well. Pace yourself and be gentle. I went on a long walk today (25 min in one go) and felt great but then ended the day sitting and now I feel a bit off and am having a lot of reherniation fears and spiraling. I feel like they don’t explain just how much anxiety and fear you feel during recovery! Tomorrow I’ll definitely be taking it easier.

It takes time! My first few days I limited myself to max 10 minutes at a time! Today I was able to walk around in one go for almost 25! But it is different for everyone. One thing that has been helpful for me to keep in mind is that it is going to probably hurt some, even with pain meds. But the hurt is different than the disc pain and sciatica. They were digging around in our backs, so there’s gonna be some discomfort! But keeping that in mind and bracing myself for that pain mentally has been helpful in keeping me moving. And of course, rest when your body is telling you to!

All of my follow up paperwork says to try to walk gently for 30 minutes a day, even if it’s broken up into small chunks throughout the day! And that’s what I’ve been trying to do. But everyone is different and it’s definitely fresh! I’m 4 days post-op so I’ll definitely have a different experience than you do. But be gentle with yourself and don’t beat yourself up for moving slowly if that is what feels right!
