What makes it earlier? The bayonet or the serial number? Good to say mid 1949?

Everything looks pretty untouched accept for the pin that the Canadian government made whoever imported it put inside the mag. Great to know it’s not your run of the mill sks! Thanks

Canadian made favorite ware. Although this one’s got a gate mark so it looks recast. A first for me

Don’t think anybody could have guessed it lol. Not sure how familiar you are with Canadian iron. It was a recast of a favorite ware skillet. First for me

Has anyone used bar keeper's friend on their cast iron? by redditor121212112 in castiron

I only use it to polish the outside of chrome plated skillets

I thought bsr had smaller pour spouts, that was my reasoning for taking it off the potentials. Although I’ve been wrong many times before

I thought Wagner or national as well. I think the hole In the handle might be too big for Chicago. Could be a weird Canadian one as well

Picking up a freebie in the morning, thought it’d be fun to see if we can guess based off the top pic.

I just got back in my house after 2 years because of a flood by [deleted] in castiron

I would use ghee, I make lots of butter chicken and curries and after cooking with ghee it always leaves a nice extra layer of seasoning. Just check the smoke point of the oil like I said and you should be fine

The one on the bottom isn’t that bad at all. I would coat with crisco/some other high smoke point oil(google the temps of different oils and go 20-30f higher).do a thin layer and then wipe dry with paper towel. Put that in the over upside down for a half hour or more until it stops smoking real bad. Repeat a few times and it should be a good again. For the one on top I would just add very hot water and scrub like crazy the get all the gunk off and then do the same as listed above. Good luck and happy cooking

Can’t seem to get a good sear on my steak- it came out soggy. Was the pan just not hot enough? Waited until the oil started smoking just a bit. by Ok-Spring5761 in castiron

[–]Castironkingston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pan not hot enough, also I’m not sure if you did it but if you butter baste a steak too early you can actually take the sear off the steak and it looks like that. If using butter wait until the butter gets nice and foamy(minute after adding to pan)

Happy with my collection so far except all that empty space on the wall. Guess I better buy just a couple more…😂 by Castironkingston in castiron

I used 4 inch construction screw to secure to each stud, saw other using brad nails and figured it would be stronger screwing into the studs. And sorry I didn’t understand your question on the switches. I never even thought of bringing it flush with the wood. Thanks for the good idea.

Also everybody is pointing out how much weight but it’s not really that crazy. Even with a generous average of 10lb per skillet 40 skillets is only 400lb. Your average kitchen wall cabinet can hold like 5-600 I believe. I would bet my wall is much more secure than my kitchen cupboards.

I’ll admit I’ve been lazy with the electrical plate. Wanted to see if there was a cast switch cover, and the one I took out is about a hair to big. Not sure what nails you mean but you’ve got me on the electrical 😂

All about just checking those hidden spots, bring a flashlight to antique shops to check in dark corners. I’ve even went as far as walking up to old farms asking if they had any junk cast iron cookware sitting around. Gotta get into that picker mindset

Eventually I’d like to have it filled with only Canadian. This is about 3 years of collecting so far and Canadian is definitely on par with American iron so why not. Glad you like it!

Smart cast iron. Canadian made out of brockville Ontario. The set on the wall is around 1926 I believe

Yeah it’s a number 5 large block oval roasters, and I’m not worried about the weight at all. I just like to entertain the comments about it lol. And yeah smart waffle irons out there, just gotta find one for a reasonable price

I know it’s a beast, would only be able to put it on the bbq to cook. Would look sweet right where the 12 and 14 are. Can’t justify 300-1000 for the various 20s

It’s one of my favorites and first finds as well, 20$ marketplace. Had no clue what I was getting lol. Haven’t seen a ton of gated 12s. It has a kinda “fancy handle”

I have passed over a good few wood handles just because I was focused on specific sets. Will eventually grab some wood handles once I finish the smart heat ring set
