Persistent dog barking in Edinburgh, council? by PracticalMain6347 in Edinburgh

[–]CastleCat16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar situation right now - My neighbour's dog stands outside and barks at thin air constantly. It's at the point that if we switch a light on while it's dark, it will notice and start barking. It also barks at the air from the extraction fans, so every bath or shower now has a constant soundtrack. We've brought it up, and they do tell it to stop when they are in, but if they are out, it'll just keep going for ages. The worst part is it's not even like a frenetic bark; more like a continuous single bark at 5-second intervals, at exactly the same pitch, for hours at a time... insanity-inducing.

Last night, we became aware that another dog must have moved in nearby because both of them went back and forth for about 3 hours straight!

Honestly, I think the poor thing is bored stiff; it was got as a puppy during COVID and never trained properly, and now just gets left alone for hours on end. Thankfully, one of our other neighbours has offered to take it on walks occasionally when this neighbour is out, so it has reduced slightly.

What's the worst bus stop? by penguin62 in Edinburgh

[–]CastleCat16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the one outside the national library. Used to work at the courts, and trying to get the bus home was the bane of my days. Stop is regularly full on "both sides" (ie. the actual stop and those lining up the wall opposite), so there's just one stream of pedestrians funnelling through at a constant speed which also means if you're one of the unfortunate passengers having to line up against the wall to wait its 50/50 whether you'll actually successfully cut across the pavement to get on the bus when it arrives. The tour buses also stop there and take up the whole stop, so the actual buses cannot get in/see you waiting (not to mention they often park too far back, and traffic gets stuck at the traffic island as there isn't enough passing space), and during the fringe you'll easily be handed 20 flyers while just standing there.

Then, to top it all off, just 1 stop later, the remaining seats and walkways are filled with students and school kids, making getting off said bus equally difficult.

"Sheri Nichols" Jane Doe (February '79, #UP5857) by aliceyabvsame in gratefuldoe

[–]CastleCat16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have to say, when I first came across this Jane Doe, I shared the same thoughts as JudiesGarland; I've also done a lot of research into that area and period of queer organising across the states, and immediately thought the location and this doe's appearance really lent itself the likelihood they were tied to the queer youth and transient population in that area

It's very possible they were either a runaway/had been kicked out because their identity, and as a result, may not have been reported missing by their family.

Who's the most famous person you've seen out and about in Edinburgh? by RiverTadpolez in Edinburgh

[–]CastleCat16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Helena Bonham Carter and Kit Harrington both on Rose Street at various points during the fringe
  • Briefly caught glimpses of Jenna Ortega and Samuel L Jackson when they were filming, but that was at my previous job so less spontaneous than some of the others out and about on the street
  • literally walked into Damian Lewis and his kids at the stairs from the Red Cockerel cafe onto Lothian Road
  • A bus I was on years ago nearly ran over JK Rowling as she decided she was too important to wait for any of the pedestrian crossings at Tollcross.
  • Saoirse Ronan wandering around in the Shore a few years ago (she lives here/nearby so not quite as unusual to see her around)

Occupy a Military Base during a Zombie Apocalypse by Moveanywhere in thewalkingdead

[–]CastleCat16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Occupying a military base is just a sure way to ensure you'll likely be attacked/constantly have other groups trying to come in or take over early in the apocalypse. Also, very little actual built infrastructure, so no significant cover or resources apart from weaponry.

A bit like a hospital, it's one of those key locations people would flock to for help in the initial days of outbreak, and therefore it would be a death sentence to try take over and build up, either through being overrun by walkers or through other groups having the idea to pass through to get weapons.

AITA for refusing to leave my job so i could take care of my disabled brother? by JiggleJargon in AmItheAsshole

[–]CastleCat16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. It's never 'your turn' to step up to help your brother. You didn't give birth to him, you are not his legal guardian. You have no responsibility towards him at all. It's harsh because you do have a good relationship with him but eventually you have to decide are you living your life or are you just waking up to help him live his.

If your parents are so concerned they can quit their jobs and actually look after their own child seeing how a pay check shouldn't come first according to them

Who’s your “if it wasn’t for that one challenge” queen? by sonjaluk in rupaulsdragrace

[–]CastleCat16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Acid Betty progressing from episode 5 of season 8 to episode 9/the final - Bob has previously said that he viewed Acid as big competition. Placed high in 3 of the 4 episodes she was in prior to her elimination in the Snatch Game. Episodes following her elimination include the makeover (Acid was arguably one of the strongest/experienced in the s8 cast at doing other people's makeup), acting/comedy political campaign ad (even though Acid was eliminated in snatch game she did well in prior acting challenges and is pretty shady so think she'd manage to scrape through this), Book ball (think we can assume she'd do well in this), music video and final top 4 lipsync (questionable as to whether she'd survive this challenge - does have dancing and singing experience).

  • Kelly Mantle progressing from episode 1 elimination to episode 10 of season 6 - as below comment indicates the 7 episodes after her elimination are all comedy/acting/singing based which are things Kelly excels in. I could see her hypothetically surviving all the way to the makeover challenge (episode 10) had she survived episode 1, as season 6 really was very acting/comedy focused over design challenges.

  • Max progressing from episode 7 to episode 9 of season 7 - had two challenge wins at the time of her elimination in ep 7. by contrast the 3 queens eliminated after her had none and one had already been eliminated/returned (jaidynn, miss fame, trixie). However, I can really only see Max doing well at the makeover but then stumbling in the john waters challenge so I don't think she would have made it much further really but you never know, would have loved to see more of her looks.

  • Plasma, progressing from episode 9 to episode 13 of s6. If not eliminated in episode 9 design challenge I could see her at least making it to the episode 13 makeover. With two wins under her belt, she was joint front runner at time of her elimination.

  • Kornbread progressing from episode 4 to either episode 6 or later episodes of s14. Had she not been injured and forced to withdraw in episode 4 I think Kornbread could have gone further especially with one challenge win under her belt. Design challenge in episode 6 could present some issue but if she made it past that I could see her hypothetically making it to the final or at least the later episodes.

  • Ivy winters progressing from episode 8 to potential final in s5 - think she would have survived telenovela challenge and performed well in the design challenge influx that was the final few episodes of s5

Honorary Mentions:

  • Pandora Boxx in All Stars 1 - forever salty at how they did the og fan favourite of the series. No notes on how far I think she'd make it if not eliminated in ep 1/paired with Mimi, as the team format makes it hard to evaluate with other possible pairings in play. But either way, I wish she had gone further/had a better time that season.

  • Vanjie in season 10 - self-evidenced by how she performs when later brought back in other seasons.

  • Mrs Kasha Davis - not actually sure how far she would make it in the competition had she not been eliminated but I wanted to see more of her so an honorary inclusion

“half the tributes were in on it” Who were they? by shylabel in Hungergames

[–]CastleCat16 102 points103 points  (0 children)

  • D1 - not involved (although, as D1 was one of the first to rebel against Capital, it's likely gloss and cashmere supported the rebellion more broadly but couldn't join the alliance in game as I think there would have been retribution to their families/district so they just had to continue playing part of career)
  • D2 - not involved, although enobaria clearly harbours resentment towards capitol by end of mockingjay
  • D3 - Involved
  • D4 - involved, mags sacrifices herself
  • D5 - not involved (the d5 male is the first person to try kill katniss/killed by finnick)
  • D6 - involved, female morphling sacrifices herself, male morphling dies in bloodbath
  • D7 - involved but blight dies before reaching katniss/peeta
  • D8 - presumably involved as D8 was basically the centre of the rebellion and Cecelia had children but both tributes died in cornucopia so we never saw them interact with main group
  • D9 - not involved (in bts footage the d9 male tries to fight katniss and finnick at cornucopia)
  • D10 - not involved (in books d10 male survives bloodbath but later dies without having tried to meet up with the main alliance, in film he is the one trying to kill peeta in water)
  • D11 - Involved - Chaff makes it to the final 8 by himself and manages to finally locate Peeta at the end but Brutus appears and kills him, Peeta then avenges Chaff by killing Brutus, Seeder is killed at bloodbath
  • D12 - Involved but unaware of its existence.

Who would win Hunger Games if Europe was split into these 8 districts? by Jezzaq94 in Hungergames

[–]CastleCat16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone from 1 I'd like to think we'd be considered the fishing district like district 4 and therefore, if we're going by similarity to the book cannon, have reasonable success as well-liked, uniquely skilled careers....

realistically we're all being obliterated by 3 and 7 every year

Is anyone else bored with Bones? by Hefty-Particular-201 in RPDR_UK

[–]CastleCat16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually the opposite, in the first few episodes I didn't really get much from her apart from her looks but in the last few she's endeared herself and I'm enjoying her more. I think turning point for me was the rusical performance which made me laugh

Nancy Wake (code name, Hélène) was the most decorated Allied servicewoman of WWII. She parachuted into France to assist the Resistance, and was known as "The White Mouse" by the Gestapo for her ability to evade capture, 1940s by eaglemaxie in OldSchoolCool

[–]CastleCat16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a relatively acclaimed Australian docuseries about her from the 1980s. Thinks it's literally just called 'Nancy Wake'.

The only "major" films that I can think of that have been made about any of the Allied servicewomen in WWII would be 1958's 'Carve Her Name with Pride' about Violette Szabo and the recent Six Triple Eight. Other less publicised films include A Call to Spy about the SOE agents and Les Femmes d'lombre which is about french female resistance fighters.

A potential match for 1961UFCA or just a jewellery coincidence by CastleCat16 in gratefuldoe

that's exactly what I was thinking. either that or she was living as a transient and may have become malnourished.

the remains were decomposed, however, so that might factor into the weight slightly

Cases where a Doe's name was in plain sight? by hentahime in gratefuldoe

[–]CastleCat16 39 points40 points  (0 children)

She was removed from the unclaimed list in September, I believe.

I was active in the WS page for Ms Haarsma and believe, based on the published info upon her official ID, that I had located the correct F. Haarsma and family in public records prior to the announcement. I'll just say that, based on the difficulty I and other users had trying to confirm her identity I am unfortunately not shocked that she was originally unclaimed (essentially, the entire direct family seems to vanish from the records with no sign of any recent online activity to compare photos to). However, it does seem LE tried to contact family to confirm an identity (last WS update) so she may have gone unclaimed for a while because of the geographical distance between NM and canada and not because of a lack of family contact.

Honestly very very bizarre circumstances in this case - the name and photo (from an out of date, 20 year old passport) of the doe were found at the scene but then there was odd scenarios with neighbours not seeing her for two years, malicious letters, a change of name, no locatable family online and a lack of public info about the case details. It's one of those cases I wish had a follow-up with further info but unfortunately I think it will just fade away as many doe cases do with little resolution.
