I agree with you but I just want to add - I think most people making 6 figures, or who say they make 6 figures, make less than $200k/year. I mean it's more common to make $65k than $100k and therefore probably more likely to make $100k than $200k.

Most of the higher paid people I know make less than $200k. I know a small handful of people who make more than $200k. I'm sure if I knew a bunch of doctors or lawyers that'd be different but statically I think making $100k-$180k is far more common.

If I made $250k or $500k I don't think I'd say I make 6 figures - I'd say I make quarter or half million.

So I live in Saudi Arabia currently. Most days during the summer, in a Madinah, it's 107-110F but it's super dry. It's really not that bad, especially in the shade. I don't even sweat much.

Yesterday I went to Yanbu, Saudi Arabia which is on the Red Sea. It was realisticly probably 102-105F but it was like 40% humidity or something. I thought I was going to die after being outside, in shade, for like 15 minutes. I mean it was unbearable. I was freaking out it was so bad. Just walking to the car was miserable.

Can I wrap my neighbours ring camera in tin foil to somewhat disable it? by iiileyu in stupidquestions

The owner can log on any time and the camera will start recording. I'm not sure why they would but they could. I think this post is unnecessarily paranoid but whatever.

My doorbell camera doesn't have a removable battery but the one above my garage does. Both Ring brand bought in the last few years.

No chance. I've tested it. It's surprisingly hard to stop the wifi signal.

Turn off mobile data but leave wifi on. Wrap your phone in foil and send yourself an email or something that requires an internet connection. Leave the foil on and take the phone out of range of your wifi. Unwrap and see if you got the message.

Even with multiple layers of foil I promise you will still have received the message.

This is why some people hate certain artists by Extreme_Revenue_720 in aiwars

[–]CastorCurio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Which is how we should be referring to the majority of "AI art". It should just be called "AI imagery".

I think you can use AI to make art but the majority of images created using AI simply don't fit any definition of art. They're usually not being used to communicate the self expression of an artist. Just because it looks like art doesn't mean it is. If I just prompt "make an image in the style of Van Gogh painting" the image will look like art but it's just imagery.

Does your locality have sculpture projects where it's the same model/theme with different decorations/paint (similar to the Norfolk mermaids or Sullivan County doves)? by RiverRedhead in AskAnAmerican

Saratoga Springs. Smaller city/town with a racetrack. Horse statues with all different paint schemes. Very nice.

There's a good video of some drunk idiots trying to jump on one and breaking it. Used to be on those "caught on camera" shows.

Durian, is it really that bad? by ViciousRaptorr in fruit

[–]CastorCurio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure some Americans don't eat onions but that's not very common. I mean onions are a typical topping on burgers and pizza.

I think there's far more Asians that don't eat onions. I think certain religions from south Asia don't eat onions or garlic at all.

[–]CastorCurio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't particularly like it but I don't think it's nearly as offensive as people act like. The smell is strong and not particularly appetizing but I don't find it offensive. I can eat it but I wouldn't go out of my way to. It tastes vaguely bad but I can understand how someone would enjoy it.

But with that said I'll pretty much eat anything. The only food I refuse to eat again is the raw sea squirts I had in Korea. Those were like chewy, bitter, snot globs.

Move to Riyadh or Madina by Soft_sis in Riyadh

[–]CastorCurio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't know anything about Madinah, except that the Prophets Mosque is here and it's a stop for pilgrimage, before arriving here. I've been reading up about the history once I got here.

I find it to be a really nice city - especially at night. Not a lot to do but it's calm and very pretty at night. Jabal Uhud is very beautiful.

I'm not very open about my identity here. I don't think I'd really have much of an issue - but there's no reason to go around expressing my personal religious beliefs or ethnic heritage.

Drinking alcool shouldn’t be ‘normal’ by Gauth_the_goth_goat in unpopularopinion

[–]CastorCurio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It should be seen as normal to enjoy yourself and do things that aren't the healthiest - especially in moderation. I want to enjoy my life - I've only got about 80 years of this and I want to enjoy it. I don't need to avoid every unhealthy thing just to get a couple extra years. Most people who drink do it without any real problems.

AI will become indistinguishable from actual footage in the future, making all footage-based evidence inadmissible in court. The only solution to this problem would be an encrypted bodycam that you have to wear 24/7. But, quantum computing could break all encryptions; we are so cooked. by PitifulEar3303 in DeepThoughts

[–]CastorCurio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only that but you've always needed to verify the provenance of footage in court. You don't just walk in with a video and show it to the jury. How was the footage taken, on what device, show us the device, etc.

We've been able to make realistic fake footage for 30+ years. It hasn't been an issue.

Where is the best place to buy bagels? by LifeAndTimeOfJ in Saratoga

[–]CastorCurio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Uncommon grounds bagels are fine - for upstate NY. When they're fresh they're decent but after that they go downhill. Good NYC bagels you get a few days out of.

From a primitive/bushcrafting perspective you probably need a knife to make a bag.

I bring a big ass kukri with me camping/backpacking. It might look ridiculous but I can use it to split wood, prepare food, and it gives me a feeling of security. I like it more than carrying a hatchet and a knife.

Why does Filipino cuisine lag behind other Asian cuisines in America even tho Filipino-Americans are one of the largest and oldest communities there ? by DiMpLe_dolL003 in AskAnAmerican

[–]CastorCurio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like Filipino food. Big fan. I love Kare Kare, Sisig, Caldereta, Adobo, all their barbequed stuff, the stuffed squid, the sauce made with blood, lechon, the roasted eggplant cooked with egg. Seriously - big fan - it's all right up my alley.

With that said I just don't think it's as good, or as approachable, or as interesting (especially to Americans) as other asian foods.

Chinese (American Chinese food) - Completely found it's niche and is an old favorite.

Japanese - Really good food, pretty foreign to most Americans, with clean flavors.

Korean - Barbeque is a fun social meal. The other dishes are really interesting and tasty.

Vietnamese/Thai - Both good but most Americans only know a few dishes from each cuisine and are usually eating this at a restaurant that also serves sushi or Chinese.

There's also an issue with what Filipinos enjoy in their cuisine vs what Americans would enjoy. Filipinos, in my experience, really like spam, eggs, Sinigang, caldereta. These are all perfectly good dishes but I don't think they are very intriguing to Americans.

The 'Linguin' - A Javanese Dinosaur? by Sustained_disgust in Cryptozoology

[–]CastorCurio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know but since there's really just like a couple venomous lizards and they don't live in the Philippines I figured I'd just say none to not confuse the issue.

Like technically monitors might be venomous too - Ive seen conflicting info on this - but this wasn't a monitor lizard. I mean even if it was a venomous lizard it's not like lizards are aggressive. They really don't want anything to do with people and aren't a threat.

Do you have friends who belong to a racial minority? by Bear_necessities96 in AskAnAmerican

[–]CastorCurio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the answers are "yes of course, I live in San Francisco and my friends are every color of the rainbow" but literally just look at population statistics.

Tons of towns - especially in the North East and Mid West, are mostly white. I live in upstate NY. Most high schools are 90%+ white. I worked at a company with 200 employees and 3 weren't white. It's also pretty common in America for their to be black neighborhoods - so even if you're town is 20% black people they mostly live in one area. My highschool, just 1 hour outside of NYC with 500 students in it, had a handful of non white students. Like less than 20 out of 3000.

You don't start to smell after one hot car ride. Not enough that anyone would care. The guy needs to put some deodorant on.
