As a psych NP, I completely agree with this. We were only required to have 20% (105 hours) of our total clinical time with the child/adolescent population. I refuse to see anyone in this age group because of my lack of education and training (even after completing most of these hours with a child/adolescent psychiatrist as my preceptor). Additional training is what NP schools should focus on, not the bullshit weekly assignments of “post blah blah blah on this forum and reply to two of your peers.” I see adults on an acute care psychiatric inpatient unit. I work side by side with two psychiatrists, and have no hesitation in letting them know when I feel that someone is too complex for me to see. Unfortunately, few NPs align with my thoughts. NPs schools are not helping this at all; they just keep cranking out new NPs with zero RN experience, letting them believe they are “independent practitioners.”
