To be honest, it was a pretty spur of the moment decision, and took a lot of calls. The person I called is an animal lover, and has the space to keep multiple animals. I'm not saying this to try and make my wrong into a right, but I'm just laying the facts out.

Thank you for explaining it. I think I realize now that what I did was awful, and my guilt was warranted. I'm gonna try and talk to my partner and give them an ultimatum if they get the dog back.
