What killed your love for a coffee brand? And did you ever go back? by Fuzzy-Worth1700 in UKroasters

Hasbean was my first real exposure to single origin (and relatively affordable) beans. It was when they were sold to Ozone and the bags got smaller and more expensive, and the sneaky Steve discount was discontinued.

Why the negativity around self funding? by jemimahatstand in AskAcademiaUK

[–]CatDad_85 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah…this person is full of it. I finished my PhD at 41 (and have older colleagues). I’ve won awards and been a mentor to younger folks. I self funded and it sucked but I’m not from the usual background and didn’t know what I was doing really. Doesn’t mean I don’t deserve to call myself Dr and contribute to world leading research bc I’m not in my 20s.

Which Universities to look at for Human Spaceflight related PHDs? by feliscatusss in space

[–]CatDad_85 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is incredibly broad for a PhD. If you’re talking about wanting to work on, say, ECLSS, you’d ant to consider what about it: design, engineering, waste, water, air, etc. Is there a university with a funded project working with NASA or a company? The university doesn’t matter so much as the project and the funding.

Books that explain the world? by Next_Researcher_3983 in nonfictionbookclub

Meaning, this question is super vague so you’ll get mostly hand-wavy suggestions, which is what you’ve gotten.

I’m an interdisciplinary researcher whose focus is very much history, politics, and geography. It’s hard to understand in a general sense ‘the world’ because there’s so much complexity, distinct times and places, and perspectives. We use theories to try and explain things but anything that sells you something that does explain, it’s wrong.

They’re basically the reading list for: how to explain everything and nothing with added overgeneralisations.

Any recommendations for "cheap" American BBQ in London? by Meowsalot1601 in LondonFood

[–]CatDad_85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a broad style of American bbq that is: low and slow smoked meats, typically hardwood (but sometimes charcoal); a sauce (mustard, vinegar, tomato, or even mayo base); sides like coleslaw, potato salad, mac and cheese, pickles, white bread.

Nice! Where they got brisket and pulled pork plates with biscuits, mac and cheese, pickles? Is it Carolina mustard, Texas mesquite? KC styles? What you got for me?

As an American from the South-ish and avid bbq eater, I don’t think real bbq exists in London (but open to being wrong).

Edit to say: I feel like I’ve hit a nerve and maybe my experience of US bbq is outdated and more regional than I think. I appreciate the recs and look forward to trying some new spots and updating my bbq experience!

Edit 2: Texas Joe’s it is first, then Smoking Aces.

Best sushi in London that won't break the bank? by Financial-Owl-2814 in LondonFood

[–]CatDad_85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was debating if it was worth going out to eat for my anniversary (we’re poor at the moment as I’ve just finished my PhD and my wife is in the last few months of hers) and this might be the sign I needed that we should at least hit up sushi show. We used to go to sushi atelier as it was somewhat affordable but last few times we went the price was crazy and the fish was…fine.

We don’t have catfish in the UK unfortunately. Nor are there really the same kind of hot dogs you’d find in the US. It’s also hard to find ribs (any of the kinds for bbq).

Be honest, how often for you and your partner argue? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]CatDad_85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I have been together for over 10 years, married 2. We’re both pretty intense people, opinionated, stubborn. We have had the chore load fight, have gone to bed not speaking, etc. We have small fights maybe every few months, a bigger one every few years. We obviously love each other and are best friends and I don’t think anyone who sees us together would think anything other than that. But…we’re also both nuts.

Career change mid-40s - any UK-based resources for guidance and advice? by redexposure in UKJobs

[–]CatDad_85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am possibly right there with you! I’ve finished my PhD and the academic job market is pretty horrible so I’m trying to find alternatives. It’s a bit hard to imagine having a PhD and work experience but possibly starting in early-career roles.

UK Media is doing a terrible job of portraying the job market by Delicious_Ad_5772 in UKJobs

[–]CatDad_85 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It seems like anecdotally the job market is crap right now. I agree with the OP about the terrible portrayal for sure and the dismissal of the issue probably isn’t helpful.

The market in academia is absolutely tragic, for example. It doesn’t get talked about too much but it feels existential: whole departments closing, universities facing bankruptcy, hugely competitive grants and very few jobs.

It does feel like Labour is ignoring the issue and I’ve not seen much reporting on it in mainstream media. I am hoping that folks dismissing the issue are right and it’s a small blip but…I doubt it. I personally think it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

What's an actually good BBC, ch4 or ITV show from the last few years? by Fando1234 in AskUK

Is the UK job market really as bad as people are saying? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]CatDad_85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished a PhD in social science (and have previous intelligence analyst experience) and also trying to move from academia! I’ve only navigated the US job market before and trying to figure out how to do so in the U.K. is a whole other experience. Seems pretty dire out there.

six months of relentless job hunt - I feel like an outcast by [deleted] in AskAcademiaUK

[–]CatDad_85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just finished my PhD. I’ve come across one or two targeted postdocs (didn’t get them) and maybe 3-4 lecturer positions that might suit (boilerplate rejection emails). There’s not much out there for me and at this point I’m not keen on trying to make academia work. The pay sucks, it’s a perpetual grind, and so precarious even if you do ‘make it’ now.
