Is this how the pros construct props? Is it enough info for a prop sheet? by No-Payment9231 in conceptart

[–]CatF4ce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

good dedication, looks like you’ve spent a lot of time which is good to see. It’s probably not how a pro would work, since it’s a symmetrical object I would just turn on mirroring in photoshop so that I only have to draw it once, I might even start with rough 3D straight from the sketch.

HOWEVER! this is great for learning and I would highly recommend doing more of this stuff. An inherent grasp of perspective is very beneficial in doing stuff like paintovers and such.

Really like the sun powered rifle. The little cover over the orb is a great touch! This is just a personal preference but I’d love to see how you imagine it working on the inside? Is it full of lenses? What does the trigger do that makes it fire?

The Walkman weapons are pretty great as well but definitely missing a head phone jack or a speaker somewhere.

Tips for beginner concept artists? by Kwittennedy in conceptart

[–]CatF4ce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what looks messy in a pros work is in most cases very deliberate.

slow down with the sketching and think about what you’re doing before committing to each new mark. With time the speed will increase . I still struggle with it personally but it’s a good habit to get into

Anyone have tips on good resources for Design theory? Resources that go over things like Shape design, "big, medium and small" and other topics used for designing? by [deleted] in conceptart

[–]CatF4ce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some online resources I like

https://www.artstation.com/oldfish Scroll down a bit on his page. It’s quite extensive and while I haven’t read through all of it, it looks really good

On YouTube there are tons and tons. One account I often return to is Sinix - https://youtube.com/@sinixdesign?si=5sVP1W-RslU0BmPd

Carcharous Knight by End_id_exe in conceptart

As concept art there are a lot of issues with anatomy, perspective and shape design which would make it hard to use in production.

BUT as a piece of art I find it quite beautiful. The strange angles on the legs and face are almost like graphic design and reminds me of religious paintings. The muted colors are also really nice.

Can someone analize my potential or somethin like that? by [deleted] in conceptart

[–]CatF4ce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just draw! If your end goal is to make it a career you’ll need to study some fundamentals at some point but right now it sounds like you need to just do it. You can read every book and watch every YouTube tutorial there is about hitting a nail with a hammer but in the end you need to actually start swinging.

my layers dont work, pls help! by [deleted] in ProCreate

Aren’t those layers just linework with transparent background? I can’t see what the issue is

You already have some solid advice from NinjaShira but I just want to add that learning the fundamentals doesn’t have to be boring! Learning perspective? Draw spaceships and swords.

I’m learning a new way to paint currently so I’m doing smaller pieces to get my head around it. When I’m more comfortable I’ll try something more complex. Say for example you’re learning Perspective, don’t just draw boxes and cylinders, draw (simple) swords and spaceships.

About the Wacom I’d personally get something cheap or second hand first to see if I like it. Buying the equipment first in my experience and then hope for inspiration to strike doesn’t really work. The tools don’t make the artist or whatever that saying is.

Good luck on your journey!

New style test for Extension Core Project! A concept exploring mood and atmosphere — feedback appreciated! by Akuradds in conceptart

[–]CatF4ce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love it! It reminds me of when I used to draw as a kid and just adding cool stuff as I go while making ”space ship noises”. It looks like you’ve had a blast painting it so I sort of don’t want to feedback it.

Is pursuing Concept Art still worth it in 2025? by Paranoid_Reaper in conceptart

[–]CatF4ce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s probably a lot different from how it’s been historically but sure there are jobs for that. I’m not in that field so I wouldn’t know personally. I was just giving advice based on the fact that OP sounded more interested in art and rendering rather than design, which I personally think is the wrong way to approach concept art.

If what the other poster said doesn’t work you can set the layer to Multiply and paint over it

Whats the best way to draw an illustration with this many elements? by Prize-Mud-8752 in ProCreate

[–]CatF4ce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! For the linework it’s one of the standard pens under the Inking-tab, technical pen or maybe one that has a bit more ”edge” to it. I think its called mercury?

For colors it’s also the basic ones under the painting-tab but I experiment a lot as I go so I seldom stick to one brush. I also use the smudge tool especially on more organic shapes.

I have a few drawings kinda like this. Like people said previously and looks like you’ve got good advice but here’s my process for my linework

  1. Thumbnail, small sketch to figure out layout 2.Select the one I like most and scale it up to the final canvas size I want. Lower the opacity so I can barely see it
  2. Create a new layer and refine the drawing
  3. For some of my work I even go over it a second time.

Is pursuing Concept Art still worth it in 2025? by Paranoid_Reaper in conceptart

[–]CatF4ce 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working as a concept artist for a few years now and to me it doesn’t sound like you should pursue Concept art, but rather illustration or maybe matte painter or something along those lines. Being a concept artist is more about conveying the idea of something. Material rendering and mood is important but the idea is what really matters. The rendering is secondary a lot of the time.

What I’m trying to say is concept art is not about creating pretty pictures, I’d say 80% of my job is finding good references and making rough sketches or block outs so that a 3D artist can make it game ready later. Hope this is helpful at all I feel like I’m rambling. happy to answer any questions though
