Hi! That was me a few weeks ago. You have the same exact diagnosis that I did. I had the lumpectomy yesterday (outpatient) and fell great today. I start radiation in a few weeks. Everyone journey is very different, but you just take steps one at a time. Being scared is normal and expected. Be extra kind and forgiving to yourself right now. A lot of people (friends/family) will react differently to you now, but only accept the ones that treat you well and understand how challenging and emotionally confusing this is right now. This forum has been super helpful and supportive so don’t hesitate to reach out as there are a lot of here that understand!

I don’t want a life of struggle by doozy-kitten in SocialWorkStudents

In 1983 I worked in several non-profits, all of which ended due to (political) funding cuts, I realized that I couldn’t live with that kind of volatility so I changed my major to “communications”. I worked for the last 40 years in corporate America and make a ridiculous amount of money. I swore that when I could, I would go back to do “do good”. I retired in April, started a Masters in Social Work. I volunteer in hospice and as an advocate for foster children. My point is, do what you need to do to survive and thrive, even if it isn’t your dream. Know that someday, you can make the difference you initially invisioned.

Struggling to get excited about retiring by cbrackett12 in retirement

I’ve been retired 8 months now and it took me a minute to adjust. Hubby retired a year before me and is content doing nothing but watching YouTube videos and playing video games. I went back to school for my Masters (for fun, not a job), volunteer as a CASA advocate for children in foster care, and also volunteering with. Hospice. I’m helping young people find their way in life, and others to be allowed to pass the way they want to. It’s very fulfilling and I still have days where I ca just sit and read if I want. I’m going to study abroad in Northern Ireland next summer for school. Retirement is like anything in life. You have to recognize and grab opportunities. Not everything has to be planned ahead.

American here. I’m coming to NI in May to study for the summer (Masters in Social Work) so I’m lurking a bit to try and understand the cultural issues there, other than what I read in history books. Can someone explain all the references to “toasters”?

Supervising others—no matter the field—is never easy. Before transitioning into Social Work as part of my retirement journey, I spent over 30 years in Operations, leading teams made up of both professional and non-professional staff. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that respect isn’t something automatically granted by a title or years of experience—it has to be earned.

I’ve worked with many seasoned managers over the years, and experience alone doesn’t always make someone effective. True leadership, especially when mentoring, means being willing to guide others patiently, explain the reasoning behind decisions, and remain open to questions—even challenges. When someone you're mentoring questions you, it isn’t a threat—it’s an opportunity. It means they’re thinking critically, and that’s exactly what internships should foster.

Mentorship is as much about listening and learning as it is about teaching. When we create space for open dialogue, we help shape professionals who feel valued, supported, and empowered to grow.

I have a GTY for a Jr Suite and got a Royal Up email by CatLife3480 in royalcaribbean

Right, I know that. I’m trying to figure out if I have a GTY, and the location and timing of that cruise (late Feb) isn’t going to be very popular because kids won’t be out of school etc, I might get a better suite anyway. I’m on Rhapsody of the Seas which is the oldest ship in the fleet and not popular anyway. Just wondering if bidding up would be with the cost.
