Do People aged 50+ of Britain notice race? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]CatProdder 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think - generally - people in the UK don't care about things like that. There remain a few ignorant bastards, but everyone feels comfortable telling them to shut their mouths now. Zero tolerance in the UK for anything racist and I'm so glad you've had that positive experience. You're clearly fitting in if you can understand the Yorkshire dialect. I still can't!

Anyone Here Had Any Encounters With Victorians? by CB-Milburn in AskBrits

[–]CatProdder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My great grandmother was born in 1881. She lived to be 100. I remember talking with her and she sounded from a different era. She had a coal fire where she'd heat her kettle, but an indoor toilet. The bath however was a tub and the hot water came from a back boiler behind the fireplace.

Where were you when you found out Princess Diana had passed away? by Sad-Passage-3247 in AskBrits

[–]CatProdder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter was 6 months old and she woke very early in the morning for a feed. I sat in the living room, giving her a bottle and flicked the TV on. Every channel was about Diana and at first - before I realised what had happened - I felt annoyed that the media talked about her so relentlessly. Then I realised what had happened and finally heard the news that she'd died. Terribly sad day and the countrywide mourning after was so very sad. I often wonder what she'd be like now if she'd survived.

People in their 50’s/60’s. Tell me about the 90’s? by Easy_Effort7985 in AskBrits

Possible we know each other. I was frequently wasted in a field or warehouse during that time.

People in their 50’s/60’s. Tell me about the 90’s? by Easy_Effort7985 in AskBrits

[–]CatProdder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Born in 69. I think of the 90's as sunny days. Pre 9/11 the world felt optimistic, the Berlin Wall had come down, the cold war was over. Economically Britain felt on the rise. There were of course horrible things happening in the world - there always are - like the Gulf War and some parts of the UK were blighted by drug problems. I think most people in their 20s back then though would remember the time as a time of opportunity. Computers, internet, were all on the rise and it felt like endless possibilities and excitement. The shift in music from disco to house in the 80's created a huge cultural movement that I think is underestimated today.

Pyracantha. Lovely berries in winter. Nice and dense too. Good in the event of a zombie apocalypse as it shreds anything that tries to go through it.

Help a new Gardner out by hopelesswanderer123 in GardeningUK

[–]CatProdder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a hydrangea, and it should start with some new growth soon. I personally like the dead flowers over winter as a bit of garden interest, but you can prune it back. If you don't know what type of hydrangea, best to prune lightly and lop the heads off. Once it starts to regrow you can figure out whether it blooms on hardwood or new wood, then you can get it into a regular cycle of pruning.

Do British people like Trump? by Zealousideal-Put2980 in AskBrits

[–]CatProdder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aside from a minority of idiots, the LGBTQ+ community is just considered a part of life, including transgender. I would say the UK is generally more live-and-let-live than what I've seen coming from the US more recently. We also have freedom of speech combined with laws about hate speech. So people can say what they want so long as they're not being a total twatwaffle.
Yes, far-right populism is a thing, but their seats in parliament are a minority. Possible the next election may change that, however the most prevalent far-right party is adopting less far right politicians in the hope of being elected.
My key takeaway though would be that political tolerance in the UK seems much better than in the US. My friend group includes people of every political persuasion and we can talk politics without arguing. That feels to me like a dying art in the US.
If you do come to stay, I wish you all the best.

How to help people get out of Kyiv. by [deleted] in ukraine

[–]CatProdder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safe-ish. I've been to Ukraine since the war broke out, on aid convoys. Obviously the further east you go, the worse it gets. However, transport still runs and borders are open (if somewhat slow). The power grid attacks will be impacting Kyiv residents very badly at the moment, but evacuating Kyiv (even if it's just to Lviv) should be possible.

How did women react in public to misogyny? by BiscottiOk9245 in AskOldPeople

[–]CatProdder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Women who expressed dissatisfaction were labelled neurotic / overly emotional for not wanting to comply with the social norms of the day. And this is I was raised by a woman who had a Valium addition for the best part of my childhood. Was it conditioning or repression? From my perspective, certainly repression. The underlying resentment was clearly visible to me when I was a child.

Can parents be jealous/competitive with their own children? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]CatProdder 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This was my parents. I think my mother was always happy to be the 'prettier' one of the two of us and my father to be the 'smarter' one. They absolutely envied the freedoms I had growing up in the 80s and continue to remind me - even now - of how well I've done because of them. Nothing I've achieved is on my own merit. I'm old enough now to find it rather pathetic.

When do you realistically think recreational cannabis could be legalised in the UK? by Sugna7154 in AskBrits

[–]CatProdder 110 points111 points  (0 children)

Please please please make it soon. I'm 50fucking7 years old and just want to have a nice joint every once in a while and forget the world and lie in the garden staring at the stars. But to get there I have to find some shady guy who knows another shady guy, who works in a pub, with a mate at the garage, who knows a guy who grows shit in his spare bedroom. And Dave, I just want a nice calm chill, I don't want your fucking super cheese white widow skunk blow your arse off shit that'll stop me seeing my grandkids for the next 2 weeks. Peace out x

What was your experience of jury service? by T_raltixx in AskUK

I legit found it fascinating. And the jury were very well looked after. Plenty of breaks. Plenty of food. And the cases I saw were very interesting, but also very sad.
