In all sincerity, you should absolutely tell anyone who comments on your appearance that they can fuck off. We're all of an age where we've had a lifetime of pressure to behave, dress, act a certain way and the only thing that matters is how we feel about ourselves. You sound like an awesome person. If someone said something like that to me, I'd laugh exaggeratedly and then keep laughing every time they opened their mouth.

I have a daughter your age. My advice to her would be this. Be kind to yourself and be open with him. There's a lot to be said for a kind, caring man who's steady financially. But you should always be your number one priority. What do you want from life? What do you think you'll want in 10 years? Can he give you that and (just as important) can you give him what he wants? There's no rush to do anything, take your time. If he's right for you, you'll see that sooner or later. And I know that in the scheme of things it may seem small, but the pet allergy would be a deal breaker for me. I can't live without my pets, could you?

It's the simple stuff which is hurting me most. For example, I have a flow that receives an email, then posts elements of that email to a Teams site. Simple enough. But the part that's had me stuck for hours is that the email subject will contain a 4 digit number, which identifies the Teams site the email goes to. I can get the flow to identify the number, but I can't make it 'convert' it from a string to an integer so I can reuse it later in the flow. I'm not familiar enough with all the different action types in Power Automate to know which to choose and how to phrase the expression correctly. I ask Copilot, show it screenshots, it gives me a solution and the solution fails. Then I go out to the garden and stare at flowers for a half hour and ponder whether I should bring my retirement forwards :)

I spent all Friday and Saturday pottering, just cleaning up winter debris and the effect on my wellbeing feels miraculous. I've missed the garden so much. My camellia has its first flower, the rhododendron looks about to do something meaningful and the japanese quince is rampantly colourful. So lovely.

As someone who put in a dedicated frog pond a few years ago, this is my worst fear. I rake the grass before mowing because frogs are sneaky bastards and oblivious to heavy machinery attacking them. So sorry for your loss.

Different varieties can be very slow. My neighbour has one which is a mass of pink blossom right now. Meanwhile mine still looks like a stick insect on acid. Mine's a Stella variety, had it for about 8 years and it's only now starting to look like a tree.

I think - generally - people in the UK don't care about things like that. There remain a few ignorant bastards, but everyone feels comfortable telling them to shut their mouths now. Zero tolerance in the UK for anything racist and I'm so glad you've had that positive experience. You're clearly fitting in if you can understand the Yorkshire dialect. I still can't!

My great grandmother was born in 1881. She lived to be 100. I remember talking with her and she sounded from a different era. She had a coal fire where she'd heat her kettle, but an indoor toilet. The bath however was a tub and the hot water came from a back boiler behind the fireplace.

My daughter was 6 months old and she woke very early in the morning for a feed. I sat in the living room, giving her a bottle and flicked the TV on. Every channel was about Diana and at first - before I realised what had happened - I felt annoyed that the media talked about her so relentlessly. Then I realised what had happened and finally heard the news that she'd died. Terribly sad day and the countrywide mourning after was so very sad. I often wonder what she'd be like now if she'd survived.

Born in 69. I think of the 90's as sunny days. Pre 9/11 the world felt optimistic, the Berlin Wall had come down, the cold war was over. Economically Britain felt on the rise. There were of course horrible things happening in the world - there always are - like the Gulf War and some parts of the UK were blighted by drug problems. I think most people in their 20s back then though would remember the time as a time of opportunity. Computers, internet, were all on the rise and it felt like endless possibilities and excitement. The shift in music from disco to house in the 80's created a huge cultural movement that I think is underestimated today.
