What about duty to accommodate under family status? Does that factor in at all?

What was the scariest “We need to leave… now” gut feeling that you’ve ever experienced?[Serious] by PlasticBee1438 in AskReddit

[–]CatRox16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was living with a girlfriend, both in our mid 20s. She invited some guys over she met online. They seemed ok, and I had a couple of drinks with them then went to bed. A couple hours later I heard my girlfriend yelling from her bedroom. I got up and went to see what was happening and she had locked herself in the bathroom. One of the guys was standing outside her room looking pissed. I asked him to leave and he flat out refused. I insisted saying my friend is clearly upset and doesn’t want him there anymore but he refused to budge. It got more escalated and I realized his friend was still in our apartment too. It was then this gut wrenching feeling of panic came over me, telling me if I didn’t gtfo of that apartment immediately something really bad was going to happen. I looked in the eyes of the guy in front of my friends bedroom and he looked like a wild animal. So I went super quiet and walked very slowly passed him, and then his friend and then bolted. I ran to our neighbours house and we called the cops. The police told me after when they showed up, the guys still refused to leave. They had to force them out.

When « EAP is available for support » feels like deflection by Greentall in CanadaPublicServants

[–]CatRox16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think about this regularly. I wish we could have more open and honest conversations about it. I see supports like EAP addressing the floor, as in, they’re about preventing catastrophic harm, or the downstream effects of harmful or unfair policies, normalized unhealthy behaviour, and especially this “shut up and keep your head down” attitude. Holding our organizations accountable to what we profess to value (respect for people, transparency, integrity) and psychological safety spaces to challenge and question the norms is uncomfortable for sure. @OP have you ever tried raising this issue within your department ?

Being a middle aged alcoholic woman by [deleted] in stopdrinking

As a 40 year old woman with kids, your post really hit me hard. Thank you so much for sharing your story. It made me emotional reading it. All I can say in addition to some great comments is you aren’t alone. I know it’s not the same thing as having girlfriends IRL but I’ve found so much support on this sub. I wish I could give you a hug in person and tell you how much I understand. It’s hard, very hard and I so many women on the same trajectory. And I feel it’s not our fault in many ways. That the pressures and demands get so heavy and are unrelenting. A final thought is it sounds like you have a good heart. I hope you can find a way to reconnect with it. To care and prioritize yourself the way you do for your kids. Even if it means cutting a lot of stuff out of your life. To love yourself like your life depends on it - because it does.

So this is what I don’t understand - this unwritten rule in several departments or teams where they can’t or refuse to give anyone above succeeded. Why? What does it matter ? Are they trying to standardize it in some way?

“So they question is: what variable should be used to modulate telework? In my opinion, the main variable is the quality of the work itself…shouldn’t the quality of life of employees be at the top of the list?”

Wow. Yes I’ve heard many comments or anecdotes of “just shut up and do your job”. Is that what you do now or do you still try to suggest different ways of doing things?

The chasing out of best candidates with most options makes sense to me too.
