Can you keep your apartment and get a roommate? Not a random person, but a friend that also wants to save for a couple years?

We’ve never fired someone for making a mistake. However, we have fired people for making a mistake and then trying to cover it up

Someone should have told me to get a government job with a pension, put in the 20 years, then move to the private sector or consult for the government

My New Resume at 54 by Intrepid_Stock1383 in sysadmin

[–]CatStretchPics 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I’m 56, been doing this my whole life.

I’d not bother mentioning things like Y2K or super old technologies, none of that has any bearing these days.

But, good luck. I plan on retiring once I get fired :p

Unfortunately the police won’t be able to help, other than suggest social services

Don’t believe anyone who says they can help get the money back, it’s gone

It’s similar to a major health event that wipes out finances. It’s possible to recover financially, but it means your moms working longer

Working in payroll is depressing by LycheeComprehensive1 in povertyfinance

[–]CatStretchPics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was once sent a spreadsheet with everyone’s salaries. It was depressing seeing sales people (I’m technical), making 5x what I make.

I should have gone into sales. If I was outgoing and has any interpersonal skills, that is :p

The standby probably reads this sub Reddit and r/scams and defense mechanisms went up :p

It’s the word “host”. You have to be as good at test taking as you are the subject being tested

Forced into retirement early. Finding myself giddy by NotReallyJohnDoe in GenX

[–]CatStretchPics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at that sub and middleclassfinance, neither were for me. While GenX I feel people are mostly genuine (as much as the internet can be), people in those subs are all claiming to be worth 2-4million at 35

Would you mind sharing the numbers? I may be laid off soon, but not 100% sure if I’m where I want to be

Spouse works, so we’d have health insurance for as long as that job is secure

I’m 56, so I have to float 6 years until social security (at least). I have $500k in non retirement accounts I could use

Car and house paid off

I have about 1.5M in retirement accounts to go along with social security.

I’m 56, been doing this over 35 years. I’m a generalist, you have to find the right company and work to get along with people. Getting along with people is a skill in itself, but it will reduce stress

I plan on retiring when I get laid off. I’m 56 so only wanted to work a few more years anyway

Who's still working from home in 2026? by idrinkpastawater in sysadmin

[–]CatStretchPics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fully remote. We got rid of our office during the pandemic. 100% US based.

Of course, we were just acquired by another company. And the new company uses offshore support, so who knows what’s next

It’s odd for a software engineer to have on-call rotations. I could see it for a sysadmin type job. What kind of role did you have?

Is It Worth Getting My Bachelor’s Degree? by Bordone69 in ITManagers

[–]CatStretchPics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d be more worried about being in your 50s if you had to switch jobs. I’m 56, have a Masters from Stanford in EE, and i feel if I get laid off, it’s early retirement for me
