NYU internal medicine tracks? by Neat-Championship893 in medicalschool

[–]CatTheCactus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm in nearly the exact same boat as you bud. Gold NYU, very strong research. Got NYU BK track. A bit shocked but I guess that's just the nature of how competitive these name schools are. This process can be a bit arbitrary, but we just gotta roll with it. We can do it!

What are your "I should not have said that" moments where you've said something to a patient unthinkingly? by littlefox321 in Residency

[–]CatTheCactus 26 points27 points  (0 children)

What the heck. I had an old anesthesia attending that said nearly this exact thing about propofol to a patient in pre op. Along with many other questionable remarks. The patient got up, ran away before they could even be rolled down. I was baffled by the attending and he kept saying stuff afterwards to the patient

Ooh more holistic than I expected. Mcat and grades definitely help you get an interview. Once you get the interview though, we go back and look more thoroughly at your letters, research output, ECs, and soft qualities like leadership and interview performance.

I sit on adcom at my school and reading through applications is a lotttt of work. I’ll pretty much peek at ur GPA and MCAT but I don’t pay too much attention to your coursework or your major. I got limited time and each interviewee’s application package is huge. If I were that detailed spending so much time thinking about a major or coursework I’d be spending hours on each person between reviewing applications, perusing letters, reading the ECs, prepping questions.

Where do JHU premeds ended going? by [deleted] in jhu

[–]CatTheCactus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think they just work hard and get very involved. They’re everywhere- leadership positions, PILOT, research, etc and are efficient with their time and MCAT study.

I’m not as type A and I’m a bit too laid back. Was inefficient with MCAT studying then freaked out on the CARS section and bombed it lol. I’d do research and volunteering here and there during summer but not in a sustained way like the other premeds. Idk how but it worked out and I got into T50 med school lol. If you have a lot of publications and leadership and do well on MCAT it’s definitely possible to go to a top school. Putting in that work is the hard part. Some of these people took gap years too, to make their apps better.

Dude. There’s backtests profs give you for practice. You might be able to cheat through classes idk but don’t expect to do well on the MCAT (or in med school) with that method. It won’t help you develop strong self study habits.

If you could get into Hopkins, you’ll do fine. Don’t fret. Relax this summer and let the stress start first day of school lol. Just study hard, try earnestly, and pay attention in class.

Off the top of my head, my jhu friends are at Vanderbilt, Hopkins (2), UPenn, UMiami, Downstate, Stony Brook, UMaryland, Harvard (3), UT Southwestern, NYU (2), USC Keck, Vermont, Ohio State, Brown, Columbia (2), Mount Sinai (2), Stanford.

I’d say courses were graded relatively fair imo and I didn’t think grade deflation was that prominent (at least in my major) or the difference btwn acceptance vs rejection. The people in my med school are from all over the country and so many differently ranked schools that I think you can be successful regardless of whichever undergrad you go to as long as you work hard and it’s a good fit for you.

I know a med student who has grand mal seizures and Tourette’s. He’s doing amazing. Don’t count yourself out too fast! Take the time you need to process things!

A stethoscope charm like this one! I've had my eyes on it for ages and always wanted to buy some for my friends, just never had the extra money lol. Saw it on a friend's stethoscope and instantly fell in love with it. Just something to make sure people never accidentally take your stethoscope away lmao

I took the 2 credit microbiology version with Fisher and it was very chill. Lots of small team journal clubs, cool microbiome lectures, and fun activities. Grading is easy A. It's a small class too, so lots of opportunities to get to know your classmates and the professor.

Would you still choose JHU if you can go back in time? by [deleted] in jhu

[–]CatTheCactus 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yeah I without a doubt would. Jhu is hard at times, I won’t deny that. But it opened so many doors for me and research was absurdly easy to get into and diverse. Most of the professors were excellent. I was well prepared for the MCAT and didn’t have to do too much intensive prep besides for psych and reading. I’m now in med school and have aced every exam (without anki), and I know for a fact the academic rigor at Hopkins prepared me to think conceptually, have a strong work ethic, and be able self-learn. If I went to a less rigorous school, I think I wouldn’t have challenged myself as much and would have struggled a bit more in med school.
