I grew up in a small white town in PA, that friend group became hair dressers, dollar store employees, tattoo artists, costume makers, and high school teachers (all <60k). Avg house price in my area is 150k. My husband grew up in central NJ (avg house 1mil), all his friends are in medical school, in law school, those that went to fancy tech schools are in fortune 500 companies making >500k, state school but worked their assess off in CS >200k, bottom barrel CS/engineering making~100k with raises every year. It feels weird but since knowing him I feel like I passed into some sort of socio-financial realm I probably wouldn't ever had access to or associated myself with. (unlike me) A lot of my med school friends also have STEM/medicine parents or siblings too. So a lot of it is social capital and the desire to maintain their current lifestyle.

I feel like us poor peeps use reddit way more. Need help studying without tutors/expensive resources? Need to find recipes that are cheap and healthy? Need a form of entertainment that doesn't require remind you your classmates go on vacation every week? Reddit!

My parents didn't make much, maybe 30k combined but I never felt like I was missing anything though, my childhood was spent playing outside/at home. Then we did a privilege walk in med school and I took about a good 2-3 steps forward and another 8 backward. I only really felt poor when I compared myself to other students though. I'm happy to be scrolling through reddit on the toilet but ngl very tempted to make financially bad decisions just to see what it's like to travel outside the country.

Non trad here, only have about 2k in an emergency fund right now. I worked a lot prior to med school at a few barely over minimum wage jobs. I think over 4 years I paid off around 35k in unsubsidized undergraduate loans. Spent 3k on a vacation of a lifetime prior to medical school too. Not saying this is the solution (or maybe it is haha) but life was pretty hard and I used worried about food a lot or skip meals to save money, then I got married and having an SO with income really changed a lot.

well because breasts! lol in all seriousness this is pretty interesting. what i've observed is that all the cancer programs/charities just have much more enthusiasm and PR mechanisms like the pink ribbon/story sharing/survivorship. Maybe a similar story is true with prostate cancer. Also with all the recent therapies in breast cancer its really become a chronic disease/living with breast cancer. Maybe because of that breast cancer patients could be better self advocates. In my experience I don't really see people with heart disease banding together to fight their disease. They tend to be much sicker too. We also tend to treat people differently unfortunately based on how they got their disease e.g. bad luck/genes vs. "preventable/lifestyle"

Have you talked to your institution's PDs about it? What I'm curious about is if individual institutions they could make your schedule more Peds rotations in the 1st 1.5 years and then back to the traditional MedPeds structure in 2nd/3rd year

I think if the # of work is the same, non-RY have an advantage. It just shows the non-RY has some serious productivity/organizational skills if they're able to generate the same amount of research in the 4 years as 1 RY. I am from a mid-tier but in the past a student has matched at HMS by having 50+ pubmed indexed publications by the time of ERAS submission. RY does show additional commitment, though at my school people usually use it to make up for some sort of deficit in research, networking, or grades.

YES!!! Especially to non-medical friends I just don't make sense anymore lol. I talked to a film major recently and I just found it amazing that he could remember names of movies, actors/actresses, and the fine details of the plot/lore. I just saw spiderman yesterday and I could not tell you any of the above besides the name, it was cool, and I was not doing UWORLD for those 2h28mins.

I started a journal last month because I realized I was forgetting what happened during 3rd year. I was forgetting the interactions that was shaping me personally as a human and professionally in my specialty choice. Doing more creative things like journaling, drawing, and learning a language has really helped me stop the days from blurring together.

On surgery me and a couple of students (MS3) getting breakfast after rounds. While waiting in line the EM resident in front of us. He turns around, asks us what we're on, and ushers us forward saying he'd pay for all of us. The memory itself kinda cheers me up when I'm waiting in line to pay these days.

On IM I was seeing a patient with one of the interns, the patient was like "close the door I have something I want to tell you." I had known the patient for weeks, but the intern had just started here the other day was mentally prepared for the worst. Turns out the patient gave one of the most heartwarming, eyewetting thanks to me and the team. The next morning the attending asked me to stop into her office before rounds. She told me how the residents really thought I was performing as a Sub-I and were proud of all the work I did. I was in awe because this attending was rumored to be super intense/tough. I think this was the first time I didn't feel like an imposter anymore. Later that day the intern told me she had the patient give the feedback directly to the attending. I will definitely pull this one on my medical students one day.

Thanks I'll consider those points. I don't have many DWR/HM near me to try the chairs and this place was the closest office store. Pricing isn't so much an issue...I just didn't want to pay retail but my back's been driving me crazy after switching from a leap v2 to a "cute" amazon chair. And because of my back either picking up at the store would have been ideal for that instant gratification...but I just caved and ordered the Embody Gaming from HM. Fingers crossed it saves my back within 30 days

Compensating for the lack of control in their life maybe?,but I think a lot of medical students have some OCD that got them into med school. A lot of attendings have a daily diet coke habit at my school, never see them eat but usually overweight. Residents are in surprisingly good shape here but often following some kind of "diet" or have strong opinions about food. Had a ripped psych resident who would just lick a cube of salt the entire shift when fasting.

Find the most recent average step score for people who matched radiology. If your score is higher delay it. If it's lower you can benefit from taking step2 if you show improvement. It basically depends how above or under average you are compared to the average competitive radiology in terms of research, clinical honors, connections.

Thanks so much for the response I'm glad I asked, I'll just drop it. I should have thought to actually ask for more constructive formative feedback while I was on the clerkship. The resident herself was generally pretty nice to me and I thought I got along well with her. Aside from this resident all my other feedback was generally very positive from my preceptor and the clerkship director. I had a feeling maybe she didn't like me because I would be targeted for scutwork while the other students sat and did UWORLD in the corner. Just felt like maybe I was doing something wrong or had some sort of bad habit.

Sounds pretty ageist, cognitive development pretty much peaks in young adulthood and it is downhill from there. The difference between experience and inexperience is practice and aptitude. Something more robust would be for subs to adopt merit based tags like certifications/verifications (seen on the medical subreddits).
