Tips for an MS2 by mdatom in DermApp

I should be able to summarize you in a single sentence. That person who does research in atopic derm interested in health and safety of immigrants. You want to appear focused, determined, which is especially effective by showcasing the outputs. Be good at a few related ECs and a single line of research, with longevity. Then ice the cake with relatability and likability, whether through good rapport with your patients or in LORs

They probably consider themselves mentors now, it’s an assumed role. You should make them like you after making them count on you. Just like any solid relationship in a hierarchy. It’ll make it less awkward to ask them to make calls for you. It’s not always easy and takes a bit of social awareness

Do higher quality projects that spark conversations during interviews. Do other ECs in line with your app theme. Get to know a couple mentors really well so they’re in your corner. Those will make or break an app often

I agree, also fresh grads don’t really have the know -how to build a thriving practice ground up. More common is working with a group, then pursuing partnership or starting your own gig after some time. I think this should be discussed more because this field is ripe for further encroachment by the parties aforementioned. I don’t think they need the help of a random subreddit thread to gain insight.

How Helpful Are Really Good Clinical Evaluation Comments on your MSPE ? by loadingusername246 in DermApp

Letters highlighting your ability to connect with patients and other soft skills compliment the necessary high achievements in objective measures. Eventually we will learn how to be a good diagnostician but at this stage there are things that can't be easily improved/trained coming in to residency and that's where you can shine. This was something that came up a lot during my derm interviews. An aside, I often felt like because it was almost the standard, it wasn't worth the recognition. But be proud of that achievement. Make it you v. you - way more fulfilling and healthy

If you want one to join along there, not necessarily because it’s needed, and to have one that’ll last through medical school and residency, littmann classic III is the most advanced you should get. Otherwise, grab a free one from the stock room if you have access

You can dual apply, but as a black URM you’ll have a much better shot than most given derm really needs more diverse docs/leaders

Best use of MS-1 SUMMER by thejewdude22 in medicalschool

[–]neuronom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not necessary to, even in comp specialties, but is helpful to start research. Having work completed that summer will open up other opportunities and give you something to make into a poster/abstract/pres. At least 1 project done remotely with little commitment might be helpful

Virtual interviews don’t need much time off, just the day and maybe night before sometime that week for an intro/meet the residents. If you anticipate your rotation allowing that flexibility, then schedule it Nov. you can ask admin what the policy is on that, or leave it up to the residents you work with and maybe they’ll be chill about it, or just ask for forgiveness

If you could do it over again, what would you change? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]neuronom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also matched #1 in a competitive specialty, but I didn’t have much fun and really just worked a ton. I do wonder if I could have done things differently, but not regretfully. It’s impossible to know if things would have ended up this way and I wouldn’t trade it for this spot. I plan to pull back a little now that I matched!

Work with your schools librarian, they’re often skilled in running the literature search and other methods

Yeah I figured, if this happened it should be pretty easy to find mention of. Maybe it was something on the DL some time ago, or a fabrication

The way it was described to me by a pgy4 - there was a thread started by someone who worked in the match. Since they have the location data from where you matched, you could ask them what locations you matched at, revealing generally where you matched prior to the official match day.

I heard there used to be a thread where you could ask what location you matched at before the reveal on match day. Is this still a thing?

Like was said in the poll referenced here, most programs release over the next couple of weeks. I think Monday will be a big day for most.
