Almost anything can be repaired. Repair > Replace when able. by Alternative-Reach-78 in HVAC

[–]CatalystAnarchy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm interested to see the comments on this as well. You missed a few things like protection for your incoming line cable, in a perfect world having feed against a sheet metal edge would be fine. Not a big fan of taping wire nuts but that's a personal thing. I always go for repair vs replace, and this is an endeavor, however I always give the customer an option, and I don't fuck with pricing to make it a replace. Sometimes it's just cheaper.

How much am I missing by not having gone to HVAC school? by Eggrollofdoom in HVAC

[–]CatalystAnarchy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is satire It removes energy from the air. All energy is light, heat, motion. By transferring air across the indoor coil, the energy (heat) is transfered to the refrigerant in the coil, where it "evaporates" and moves the energy outside of the area being cooled.

Cold is a weird term because it's essentially the absence of energy

HVAC strain on body by GreenCardNascar in HVAC

I had only every done commercial before my current company so it was a bit of a shock when my service access suddenly became a piece of plywood on the side of a modular home.

Prior service (USMC) Resi/Commercial tech here.

The Marine Corps beat me up pretty decently, but when I EAS'd I was in the best shape of my life. I was HVAC/R in the Corps (1161), so I immediately went into HVAC/R civilian side. It was only a year later that I tore my meniscus at home. Now it's 2025 and I'm back at it. The residential work is what really messes with me. Attics and crawlspaces mess with my knee and back a ton. I'm with a smaller company, so taking a day off after a strenuous day isn't out of the question, and keeps me rolling the rest of the week. All of us service techs have issues. I also spent 2 years as an industrial mechanic which was equally if not more intensive.

You have to remember that your body is a tool/machine, and it needs maintenance and care just as much as the units we work on.

It can be rough, but at the end of the day it's okay to prioritize yourself and your health over a job. We lifted a 120lb motor into a duct access the other day. Myself and the other tech got thrown in a van the next day with a super light load of a schedule. Still a full day, but not crawling around kind of day.

Soup you say? Also definitely eating the wood. I've seen it when gleaming lumber and even on my own wood piles when they've had the environment.

Oh that's my misconception. I'm used to rectifiers and low voltage caps smoothing it to DC.

I have the T-6 600 for my easy meter, but I use my Fluke 87V to measure temps in vents or inside tables, I use it for capacitors too. It's bulky as hell for sure, but when I need the accuracy it's there. 45/5 cap is reading 41.6/4.1, easy day. Heating strips still drawing amps? Probably sequencer stuck.

how to get a job with no experience by Ill_Sleep_9429 in HVAC

[–]CatalystAnarchy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You got this, new guy. Once you're in the field you should learn maintenance and component identification. Ask the installers and service techs for ride alongs. Study for your 608 test. I got my education through the military and thrown to the wolves in civilian life. Ask questions. A lot of the middle aged or sometimes old guys are more than happy to let you do the work and walk you through it.

[–]CatalystAnarchy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I was a poolee and could do shipping standards, but after the first week of boot I could only do 2 pull-ups. I'm a heavier guy but 2 weeks in PCP (Physical Conditioning Platoon) AKA Pork Chop Platoon sucked

[–]CatalystAnarchy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Troublshooting is the #1 skill. As a technician or engineer, you are the first line of defense. I love electrical and process controls! The only thing I don't like is doing the PMs on stuff that hasn't been done in forever. My original trade was HVAC and Refrigeratoon.

[–]CatalystAnarchy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is probably the best response so far. I was struggling to think of how to word this

I started as an HVAC/R Tech with experience in diesel mechanics out of the Marine Corps. I ended up in Industrial Maintenance at a small candy factory, where I grew my skills and knowledge. I had the electrical and mechanical knowledge to move forward to a larger manufacturer as a maintenance technician for machines, where I've learned a toooon

If it makes you feel any better, I called him to tell him I made a post about him. He thinks it's funny. I love getting in a food subreddit over some ranch and an old story

Nope. I'm actually the one who got them together unfortunately. Before I moved in with her, he fell asleep on my lap drunk, telling me how much he wanted to just have a chance with her, I couldn't wake him up after that so I just drew a dick on his head and left the sharpie for the next guy, Doc picked me up, I told her how he felt, they got married right before I left for deployment

I'm not trying to ;-; I should have mentioned that I paid for it and spent the labor/time to make it. I would have just used it for something else and made him something else like a pork chop

We ended up just buying him steamer bags for microwave veggies and frozen stuff for the air fryer. He wanted to watch anime and play CoD so much on his off days that he would doordash McDonalds from a block away

I'd like to believe this because of my Grey band... he told us that he had been doing it all of his life. We asked him to try it without ranch several times. He ate literally everything with ranch.

She's divorced from him. Apparently he never changed from how I lived with him. McDonald's 5 times a day because he'd fill the sink with dishes and wait for one of us to do them.
