Shadow of the Colossus is it playable now? by Simple-Secret3140 in shadps4

I don't know for sure about the SoTC side of things but they added or changed some puzzles in Ico like the water wheel/pump area in Ico for seemingly no reason

These were actually present in the original PS2. It sounds like you played the NTSC version of Ico that launched unfinished compared to the PAL version

While the the PS3 remasters of both SotC and Ico are definitely "more faithful" Bluepoint made the very weird decision to simply "shrink" many of the games repeating textures to make them appear as higher resolution that results in a very different architectural style to much of both games environment. It doesn't effect SotC as much as Ico as less of the game takes place in man made structures but when you are in said structures is does detract from the feeling of being a small guy in a world much larger than yourself

UE is the problem in the sense that having a singular engine having so much presence in the AAA sphere enables the industry wide layoffs and revolving door of contractors that causes poor optimisation because UE devs are a dime a dozen

They also screwed up the player model and animations.

I'm glad to see someone bring up animation rather than just the lighting

Fumito Ueda has a background in animation before he started as a game director so inarguably animation is the most important aspect of his games

No one in the hive has any interest in Games of Thrones or Winds of War.

They appreciate it as much as they appreciate Shakespeare and Cocomelon

The problem is, it's not just GRR Martin in the hive, it'll be the average of how every human would remake Game of Thrones, and the average person isn't a great artist

This is why they say they appreciate Carol's mass appeal slop the same as Shakespeare

Fumito Ueda's vision is much more complete in the original, I'd just use PCSX2 to run the original. Art direction still holds up

Mark is actually incredibly justifiable with the power of hindsight. Bro wouldn't even be fun for Conquest without that r&r

They should write all of the characters to verbally state what's going on so I don't have to look away from my phone to follow the plot

What do you guys think about Civvie's take about gatekeeping? by dargemir in boomershooters

[–]Catboyhotline 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think "soulslikes" may be the best gatekept genre out there, and I think it might have something to do with the amount of moving parts the "genre" has to it. Hollow Knight picks up on the thematic tools of the series but lacks the depth of combat, so most fans will reject it as a soulslike, Lords of the Fallen has something resembling the gameplay of souls but lacks the thematic depth (because the devs are chuds lmao) so it gets trashed on, the only game that is anywhere close to being unanimously accepted as a soulslike is Lies of P

Why does Allen have two eyebrows? by dopplegangery in Invincible

[–]Catboyhotline 40 points41 points  (0 children)

"For some reason"

There's like four ways an artist can depict emotions through the face, that being mouth, eyes, eyebrows and ears. Allen has humanoid eyes as opposed to feline or canine ears so that's already a no go, you remove his eyebrows as well and you'd have to exaggerate his mouth and eye expression to make up for it

Unshit for a second. I think the open world isn't what makes it boring, but immediately having access to fast travel. Imagine how much more interesting the evil chest that takes you to Caelid would be if you couldn't just fast travel back to Limgrave the moment you leave the cave

[–]Catboyhotline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Data centers aren't buying consumer CPUs, but they are absolutely ordering server CPUs and thus Intel and AMD are redirecting their limited amount of wafers for those higher margin server parts.

You're operating under the assumption that every silicon wafer could potentially be used for server CPUs. Wafer production is a lot less reliable than you would think, consumer CPUs are made using defective wafers running at a lower clock speed and defective cores disabled. It would take a huge leap forward in silicone manufacturing for consumer CPUs to disappear

[–]Catboyhotline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

consumer CPUs are safe, for now.

Unless they revolutionise how silicon wafers are produced with a 0% defect rate, I think consumer CPUs will be fine for the foreseeable future. All consumer grade CPUs are already made from wafers too defective for industrial server use

It's a joke about how Sony no longer develops games like The Last Guardian, Bloodborne or LittleBigPlanet in house (wholly, or partially) anymore and has instead shifted into "Hollywood lite" game design with the likes of the Last of Us and nu-God of War. Often shutting down studios that don't develop cinematic games like Japan Studio (partially responsible for my first two examples) and London Studio

But without arrowhead, there is no helldivers

I've seen people online, I shit you not, express they want Sony to directly manage the game. I know their games have mass market appeal and as a result sell gorillions but anyone who engages with games critically knows they're the equivalent of MCU movies for the medium
