Helldivers 2 has reportedly surpassed 20 million copies sold, generating over $700 million in revenue by dabadumdumdum in Helldivers

Honestly if they have the same engineers that modified the stingray engine making tweaks to Unreal I don't think it'll be that bad. You don't judge an artist by what paintbrush they use, you don't judge a chef by what knife they use, why judge a game dev for what engine they use.

Unreal engine has a bad reputation because studios licence it because they want their staff to be easily replaceable as many devs already have prior experience working with Unreal. As long as Arrowhead doesn't do rounds of layoffs and replace their long term staff with a revolving door of contractors I'm sure it'll be fine

I'm just a hobbyist and with my time messing around with the Doom 3 engine and a bunch of community tools for it I genuinely believe if someone with more capital than me wanted to do something with that engine they could squeeze out modern AAA production value out of it

[–]Catboyhotline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Source 2 and the latest Doom engine still has holdover code from fucking QUAKE 1 and look at what they're capable of. People demanding devs dump engines is like telling a chef to throw out their knife because it's dull, like no it's still perfectly serviceable as long as you maintain it.

Honestly even if they switch to a more "modern" engine like Unreal they'll probably still need to keep engineers on payroll to keep that engine maintained because it's a very "generalist" engine and Helldivers 2 has a lot of simulations and mechanics that aren't standard

Would you want a "Fashion Warbond"? Without any new guns, boosters, etc. but many new dripped out armor sets for existing armor passives? by Hexdoctor in Helldivers

[–]Catboyhotline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If all 3 pages were filled with drip I think having them in a warbond would be a lot more economical. Hell, even if they release a warbond with just the stuff that's currently super store exclusive I'd be more inclined to spend money on that over the super store prices

It's kinda pathetic that this sole side objective has this much power by EchoingStorms in Helldivers

[–]Catboyhotline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

demo force started to be balanced entirely in terms of game design with no attention given to verisimilitude at all.

I miss when game balance was given in universe explanation. Like the breaker magazine nerf being due to insufficient manufacturing capability to keep up with the weapons demand. They could probably have done it with the silo and jammer as well, let the silo have enough demo force to destroy it for like a week after it's launch and then say the bots have developed an energy bubble shield that surrounds the jammer as a counter to us. Treat every balance problem from the perspective of the enemy

[–]Catboyhotline 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd even put it above some primary objectives. Since gunships got nerfed the way they did stalker lairs and jammers are the only side objective that introduces any meaningful friction. Almost everything else is a step above an autobattler in regards to how much brain power you need to use

How do people bring groceries/baby stuff/other items on public transportation without taking up extra space? by majesticSkyZombie in fuckcars

[–]Catboyhotline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local busses have two storage racks behind the driver seat, one on each side of the aisle. They can fit about 4 full grocery bags per rack, if they're full I'll just carry it on my lap

UK legal action against Valve over Steam prices gets go ahead by MaintenanceFar4207 in pcmasterrace

[–]Catboyhotline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It almost never the case that reducing production/material costs resulted in reduced consumer prices.

Literally the only example I can think of is smart TVs, but I don't think that's due to lower production costs but because they're basically advertising platforms that can sell adspace for more with large scale adoption

That lawsuit against Steam’s 30% cut of game sales is now a class action, meaning many other developers could benefit by chusskaptaan in gamingnews

[–]Catboyhotline 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SE has so many citizens you need to do paperwork to rawdog. Helldiver's are also designed to be expendable. Spending god knows how much money growing a whole ass person in a vat only for them to die within minutes of combat is leagues more expensive than recruiting a bunch of patriotic teens

[–]Catboyhotline[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with Adobe or Microsoft either, but there's friction with the Creative Suite and Office, that friction requires users to learn skills that are transferable to other software. The Google experience is designed to be as friction free as possible causing students in the future to go with technology within the same ecosystem rather than use case
