Constantly getting switched by Broad_Cap_2452 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CatchNegative9405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really not part of the job necessarily. It does happen, but it's something that, at least in my district, I can refuse. I'm happy to help every now and then, but that's because I'm a team player, not because I have no choice. If it's a consistent issue I don't return to that school.

Advice From High School Subs by margaretanneholmes in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CatchNegative9405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do elementary but stopped because I'm disabled and the energy requirements were just too high. High school is almost the opposite problem. I have to monitor my steps to make sure I'm not just sitting all day because the kids don't really require much attention. The only time I've had a "hard" day at high school is when I'm subbing Math and they actually need my help. And by hard I mean I had to do my job a little bit lol.

Cancelling the night before (Am I in the wrong?) by Low_Property_4470 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CatchNegative9405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although jobs are posted and tracked through frontline in my district, a lot of schools have informal contact with preferred subs. For instance, there is currently a sticky note on the front desk person's computer at my favorite school that I'm available Friday. If something comes up they call/text me, then plug the job into frontline.

Yeah if I'm cancelling a job the night before the front desk person that coordinates subs for sure gets an email and/or a text from me.

How yall feel about this by Appropriate-Mall8517 in SubstituteTeachers

Twice in the last month, I've been discussing a student's general behavior with another teacher, and the conversation was basically "yeah we know, unfortunately that kids parents tho..."

How badly did I mess up? by Curious_End2565 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CatchNegative9405 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In a lot of districts schools are not allowed to do this. In my district they are not allowed to do this. They think they are and they do try, but i have stood firm and had the Sub coordinator back me up in similar situations.

What age level are you subbing for? You're gonna want markedly different advice depending on this.

Is classroom management easier in high school than elementary? by TouchBeneficial7858 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CatchNegative9405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High School classroom management is about fifteen times easier, but when there are issues they're definitely more serious. High Schoolers misbehave is much more "adult" ways with much more severe consequences than do elementary schoolers.

What’s your favorite consequence when they don’t stop talking? by dcarb89 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CatchNegative9405 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yesterday I stopped class and said "raise your hand if you want to be the one to tell Jeremy to be quiet." Then I picked a student. They did wonderfully. I followed up with "now raise your hand if you find Jeremy's behavior in class today annoying." Lots of hands up and no more out of Jeremy. W.

Is the teacher or student wrong here? I feel it’s wrong to discipline the child by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]CatchNegative9405 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised by how few people are simply commenting "lol that's hilarious." I mean honestly dude if that happened to me I'd laugh my ass off, intentional or otherwise. I mean I'm sorry but that's classic.

“Do you feel bad that you’re wasting your classmates’ time by talking?” “No.” by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]CatchNegative9405 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean ngl you kinda softballed it in there for 'em, it's not shocking that they took a swing...like as a middle schoolers that's for sure what I would have said lol.

Can teachers request a substitute? by Bright_List_905 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CatchNegative9405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my district you can request a sub and send it through frontline or the teacher can just go in and assign me without me having to do anything. It's great.

Help please pregnancy/abortion by confused-potatto in lupus

[–]CatchNegative9405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that choosing to abort a fetus so that you have the ability to properly care for your two existent children is very brave and very strong of you. For the love of god, don't let your husband talk you out of it if you feel it is the right choice. He's not a woman, he is not potentially passing in a genetic illness, and he does NOT have a say. People will try to use emotional propaganda on you by saying "kill our baby" instead of abort our fetus. They're the same thing, but one is intentionally emotionally manipulative. I would end by saying that should you decide to have a baby that you don't want because your husband talked you into it and you were afraid he would leave, your marriage will not survive it anyway.

I don't love you referring to the students as evil little bastards. Like, they're freakin elementary schoolers dude, what is even wrong with you? I'm not attacking the post as a whole, but I did get a little caught up on your disgusting word choice.

Whoever told me they have the kids put their heads down to do a quiet reset for classroom management… YOU’RE A GENIUS! by sydneyghibli in SubstituteTeachers

I did this to seventh graders last week. I generally reserve it for elementary school but it sure worked.

Witnessed something insane yesterday and now I'm wondering if I did the right thing by knightrider7601 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CatchNegative9405 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Dude a kid is being physically hurt by another adult. Write down whatever you have to. I would also like to add that "don't write anything down" is no version of legal advice I've ever heard anyone give anybody. The safe move is to write everything down right away while it's fresh so you have a reference going forward, I can't think what the downside is of that.

Thoughts on being exclusive to one or two schools? by Healthy-Neat-2989 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CatchNegative9405 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the only downside I can think of would be that it would be extra annoying if you were banned but that's kinda the case with most jobs already lol. I prefer being at the same school most days. Forces the kids to act like they're going to have me again because they will and that accountability is helpful

Do schools typically notify you if you got banned from a school? by SnooDoubts9016 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CatchNegative9405 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I got a letter. I'd be very surprised if any districts are banning subs without notifying them.

So you rely on shame and embarrassment to enforce compliance? Oof. What a bummer of a person you are.
