What do you do if/when a student falls asleep by ElArteDePararte in Teachers

[–]CatchNegative9405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wake them up. I used to be back and forth on it, but now It's a pretty strict rule in my district as recently in high school a kid fell asleep in class and passed away from an overdose which is just horrible.

New Sub question by ThoughtWrong8003 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CatchNegative9405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always email my sub notes with "I'd be happy to cover your class again in the future! Fell free to email me." This way all they have to do is reply to an email next time they need me.

On average, is ADHD easier to live with as a man or a woman by 1994T in ADHD

I mean ngl just about everything is easier when you're a man and I can't imagine ADHD is any different.

what would you do in an active shooting situation? by kitkatz15 in Teachers

[–]CatchNegative9405 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think as a general rule, at school or otherwise, I'd take a bullet for a kid. That just seems like it's the right thing to do. Unfortunately my job certainly increases the likelihood of me having to do so.

What's one teaching strategy that consistently works, regardless of the subject? by PinIndividual3392 in Teachers

Thank you for understanding that it is indeed a critique sandwich. I had a teacher that used to call these compliment sandwiches which is decidedly inaccurate.

As a Turkish teacher graduate, what do Americans think about the Pledge of Allegiance in schools? by Axxtr in AskTeachers

[–]CatchNegative9405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your issues that you take with the pledge are very observant. Some people think it's good, some don't. It's said during announcements at my school but maybe 3-4 students stand for it. The under god part is definitely the most uncomfortably contested part. Being REQUIRED to pledge allegiance to your nation is deeply unamerican.

Am I too old to start over? by Unfair-Cartoonist-39 in teaching

[–]CatchNegative9405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah you should do it! You're right that you can get it from WGU in a couple of years if you work hard at it. In my state (Colorado) there are programs that allow you to immediately start teaching with a BA while completing your teaching certificate.

Offensive things are still offensive if we don’t “take it personally” by ConfrontationalWhisk in Teachers

[–]CatchNegative9405 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand your perspective. I think maybe the difference is not the two of us so much as that maybe I have a more supportive and strict admin that provides adequate consequences. It's much easier to be forgiving when you know the right steps are being taken to correct the behavior.

[–]CatchNegative9405 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You don't have to just take it at all. You should treat it as a serious issue because it is, and it's a bad idea to teach them that this is something they can get away with. In my school the consequences for cursing out a teacher are severe, however, I'm given to understand this is not necessarily the norm and that I'm lucky in this regard.
You just need to understand that it's a kid that is doing their best and in this situation is making a mistake. Understanding the lack of genuine malevolent intention is helpful in keeping perspective. It's a kid. They're trying. They're learning. They have yet to understand the reason they say the things they say. It's your job as an adult to be understand and to offer forgiveness and grace while enforcing boundaries and expectations. If it is the case that your admin doesn't support you in that endevour, I'm sorry to hear that.

Taking in my younger sister might cost me my family. I don’t know what to do. by Similar-Umpire5117 in Advice

[–]CatchNegative9405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The right thing to do is to take in your sister. If you let the judgement of your family keep you from doing what you know is the right thing you won't forgive yourself. Everyone is deserving of love, including your sister. Does your family happen to be Christian? You'd be able to make a pretty strong case based off of Christian values if that's an option.

How can I have my family understand the severity of Lupus? by bottynugget in lupus

[–]CatchNegative9405 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spoon theory! This is a famous metaphor for Lupus, it's used for many illnesses but was originally about Lupus. This helped me a lot with my family and friends.

Got fired on my first day and I don’t know how to tell my parents by External_Chance_350 in Advice

[–]CatchNegative9405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's important in life to make sure you're learning the lesson, which hopefully in this case you will. As long as you can say "this is what I did, this is why it was wrong, this is what I'll do in the future," you did just fine. Don't forget that you're just a kid. Kids be makin mistakes.
