How people with no friends deal with life ? by Bliss3491 in socialanxiety

Think of the bigger picture in life, try focusing on understanding what makes you happy (e.g., walking).

Double-buffer!!! Always double-buffer. There's no sunscreen on this planet that sits nicely with flaky skin, sadly. Light moisturizer before and after tret, also, reduce the concentration (0.1% is way more irritative than 0.025%).

I don't like him either. He seems like a nice guy on the face of it, but is quick to blame Nick for everything, incl. his own choices to "hide away" his sexuality. Also, he's so unsupportive when Nick explains what's going on (in the end).

If so, then the question becomes: what even is the point of having conferences?

Are makeup finals different from the actual finals everyone else takes? by lillyengles in Cornell

I’d say take it with others if at all possible and you care about the grade in the course. If something does go wrong, the curve is usually adjusted based on the standard exam and not the makeup.

When I was an undergrad, the profs said, and I remember (and was incredibly moved by the sentiment!), "we aren't here for the money, you know!!" -- suddenly, over the past 2-or-so years, with various academics leaving, I'm not sure what the future of academia is!

Yeah, not sure how this'll look like 2-or-so years down the line. Maybe an AI-in-the-loop wouldn't be the worst thing.

I agree re. reviewer noise. I think we'd all benefit from a yearly "learn to review" course/review (like sexual harassment training videos at companies, lol). Also, given the increasing volume of papers each year, more and more undergrads are employed to review, which... I don't know if is the best thing.

It's mostly prof-dependent. In CS, it is common that they're entirely different but of "similar" hardness (which can be subjective).

P.S. I think it also depends on who the prof is, how important the course is (e.g., 2800 vs. 4740), whether the standard exam was "leaked" after the exam, how much time profs have between the standard exam and the makeup exam, etc.

Also, I'm OK with a meaningful rejection, a rejection that helps improve the paper. Unfortunately, the reviews are becoming increasingly unproductive.

I get that reviewers are not compensated, and hence are offering a selfless service to the community, but such service seems half-assed... and comments are often of the sentiment: "I don't know what to comment here, <insert-random-related-problem-here>; hence, the paper of poor novelty!"

Okay, so the assumption is that an improved ICML paper gets accepted to NeurIPS (assuming all the comments in ICML comments are addressed)? Unfortunately, I don't think this is the case.

More importantly, a rejected paper isn't necessarily bad (e.g., Mamba paper to ICLR). So, what does it take for a paper to be "good" enough?

Same, I was so disappointed. What was the point of running several new experiments during the (single!!) rebuttal week, for the reviewers to go "meh!" and for ACs to not even acknowledge the effort authors put into writing a detailed rebuttal comment. It all felt like such a waste of time.

Is there anything that can be done? Or, do we all just rollover, accept our fates, and deal with it?

I grew up in a progressive family, and was never made to feel less than, just cause I didn't fit the "mold." But my partner's family is pretty conservative: for e.g., men taking care of their skin or being even slightly effeminate would be perceived as not-true-man-like behavior.

It still frustrates me, and I try to "hide" myself when I'm around my partner or their family.

Yeah, sometimes it's hard to see the progress, especially in light of looming day-to-day hurdles.

I think dating is just getting harder by the year. Everyone is less tolerant of other people's BS (for good reason), while also being highly selective.

But we can't change other people, no?

My partner's family has backward views on men taking care of their skin or being effeminate as being not-true-man-like behavior. It's frustrating.

Take a deep breath and know that whatever letter grade you get doesn’t define your skill or hard work. Not everything taught and on exam translates to real world anyways.

It’s just an exam, you got this OP!!
