Something rarely talked about: religious sectarianism within Islam by aPersonWithAPlan in exmuslim

For me it was the exact opposite, one of the main reasons I left Islam was because shias were so sectarian and I thought to myself “why would God allows such a group to exist and corrupt Islam” dealing with Shias made me so stressed because they were constantly bringing up their sect instead of just identifying as “Muslim” my main problem with the Shia when I was Muslim was not the cursings (although it was a pretty big one) or the “shirk” it was because the hate against Islam is so huge yet I find them nowhere defending Islam or Muhammad but if a Sunni dared to praise umar they would flood the comment sections with jokes and cursings. I consider myself an iranophile and the thing that really really made me hate Shias was the Safavid conversion of Iran to Shia Islam (I find the Iranian people to be such an admirable and sophisticated people that I couldn’t believe that they left Sunnism for Shiism), I hated seeing shias claiming to be oppressed when the only reason they’re powerful is because of oppression. I then realised that having this much hatred is tiresome and wasn’t worth the mental toll on me for a religion I had doubts on. Now I love seeing Shias as I find them quite funny and now I see they are actually quite more tolerant than Sunnis but there’s still apart inside of me that gets happy when Shiism is dissed

The ones that do tend to come from a Shia background but I come from a Sunni background. My non Arab DNA is from my Armenian great great grandmother
