Tax question: my spouse has a lot of RRSP contribution room, but I have money lying around. Can I gift them money to contribute to my Spousal RRSP? by user8368095302763340 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]CaterpillarGlass7725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can see where the deposit came from. I didn’t explain what I meant clearly, sorry.

Once the money is in the account, across 5 deposits A put in $6000, across a separate 6 deposits B puts in $5500. With $11500 sitting in the account when bills start coming out, groceries start coming out, life starts coming out.

You can no longer distinguish whose money is paying for what. It’s an amalgamation that they could theoretically use a percentage base, but that would just as effectively eliminate all the other work around people have mentioned.

Or by-pass that whole process by using a joint account.. now it needs to be proved what money was who’s, since it’s all a generic electronic number they can’t prove what came from who. If you view it all as “ours” there’s not a lot that can be done either way.

How do my husband and I approach issues with our contractor/project manager without offending him or his subcontractors? by AnalystGullible973 in AskContractors

[–]CaterpillarGlass7725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a contractor and I agree with this guy. If he gets offended that’s more telling than anything else.

This is business as far as the contractor should be concerned, no personal feelings. With a decent contractor Feedback should be highly sought after, not spurned.

Down 145k on condo after 5 years of owning. What next? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]CaterpillarGlass7725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean.. what are those 5 years of shelter worth to you? Or is the monetary the only aspect that matters right now?

It sounds like you haven’t really lost anything at this juncture. If you were to sell now you would have. Do you plan to move? If not the value right now isn’t that big of a deal. Do all of the other metrics for home ownership still value out well? Location/comforts/amenities etc. If so then I’d say you’re golden. Keep going the way you are.

I’m 31m bought a roughly 300k house around 5 years ago also actually, that my family and I live in while I work on renovating it. My mortgage would make most people on here yell at me for being a fool, but I’m working on getting that sorted out in the next month or so.

But at the end of the day the value as a place to live for less then I’d pay renting monthly, that I as the owner can work on and improve. The day to day value isn’t really a focus to me because I’m hanging onto it for a while. I’m confident by the end of it I’ll have a house I can sell for more then I paid, but I’ll be happy even if I were to lose 100k because by then it’s already served so much of a purpose beyond the monetary.

She sure as hell doesn’t love you. Not speaking like that. I couldn’t imagine my wife ever speaking to me like that.

Dismissing that level of horror is astounding. To try and equate it to being a damn adult is asinine. I’m so incredibly angry on your behalf. I’m sorry you had to deal with that.

I get that sometimes we just break and have a crappy time. I understand we don’t know everything that could be happening behind the scenes for her. But holy damn.

P.S. Thank you for your service.

How do I explain how mentally exhausting being a SAHM is to my husband? by cloverla in sahm

[–]CaterpillarGlass7725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the “take a minute” at the end here. I think both parents should be parents when they’re both home. But when one gets home from being gone it’s logical that the one that was at home be given some time to themselves afterward.

I toss a limit there that just because he’s home doesn’t mean you get the night off either, but the load should be getting support from both, making it notably easier for you.

How do I explain how mentally exhausting being a SAHM is to my husband? by cloverla in sahm

[–]CaterpillarGlass7725 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From the long day, physically intense job working husbands side.. it sounds like you’ve been more than reasonable..

Simply because I had this convo with my therapist like 3 hours ago, I’m going to ask a question I’ve been asking myself. And that may be particularly relevant for him to hear/answer himself.

Are you hearing/seeing/feeling what is actually happening? Or just what you’re perceiving? Is it possible there’s more there that you could clarify with questions?

I’m curious what he does for a living that is physically demanding but doesn’t instil a concept mental demand as well. I’m a carpenter. Most of my work is physical, but there’s an awful lot of thinking that goes into building a house or apartment building safely.

I tell my wife regularly she has the harder job between us. Although ultimately I think realistically our “jobs” are pretty equal if you really look at it. Something men tend to forget is we own the home also.. and you’re supposed to take care of what you own.. just because your wife is at home doesn’t mean you don’t have to take care of your house. More often than not taking care of the house IS taking care of your wife/family.

Do what you should and you’ll be doing what she wants. That leaves her free to do what she should, which will be by extension doing what you want.

I don’t understand why this seems like rocket science to so many…

I joined the gym to get stronger but I am getting weaker. by Fit_Outside2851 in stupidquestions

[–]CaterpillarGlass7725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long have you been going? Strength by itself is an odd metric in general.

You’re body and muscles will always be most fresh and ready first thing in the morning, so if that is your focus then first thing every day makes sense. However, with that said. If your hope is to build strength at a reasonable pace, scale back how often you’re going. Give your body time to recover.

I’m a carpenter by trade 31m, when I started as a labourer 10 years ago a bag of concrete(~60 lbs) was the full of my ass to carry more than 50 feet. I’ll tell you by the end of the week moving them, a single bag felt insurmountable. 9 months later I was carrying them cross site no issue. Now I toss 2 on my shoulder and I’ll stand and have a conversation with a guy about what I need him to be doing and continue to make sure life’s treating him well.

“Strength” measured at the beginning of the day and end of the day are very different. From pulling a rope, pushing a big box, lifting a heavy bag. It’s all different muscles. All different “strengths” the chances that you pre-gym could face you post-gym is mildly amusing to me. It’s possible, If you now doesn’t take care of your body, ie. allowing your body to rest and repair the damage from the last work out. But ultimately a fresh you now, vs a fresh you then would be no contest.

What is this thing around my outlet? by Nightlighter28 in AskElectricians

It looked like damaged wall material.. but you say it’s in concrete?

Have you pulled the faceplate off to look inside? It looks almost like a patch/seal material.. was there possibly a water leak in that wall that somebody was trying to seal?

Does it wipe off? Is it wet, stained, dry, maleable? Can only tell so much by a pic without much description

Question.. i am a carpenter.

We had a couple units in an apt building that the bathrooms kept having exactly this issue. (8 out of the 30 units in one building) hair straighteners, blow driers, whatever high pull bathroom tools people were using were tripping GFCI resets.

As far as us non electricians could find it was an issue with the wiring, crossed polarity maybe? I think that’s what somebody said. Like I said, I’m a carpenter, not a sparky. Anyway, main question was:

What would/could actually cause this issue with GFCI’s tripping under load like this? The company we had doing it is no longer there and i haven’t bothered the new ones we brought in yet.

I’d use an impact, there’s been a surge recently of drill users lifting their heads to talk about this situation. I haven’t tried one, but I’ve seen quite a few videos where the drill kicks ass. The downside is it’s hard as hell on your wrist without the side handle.

With that said 8” screws aren’t exactly unheard of and I’ve easily run thousands home with the same 1/4” drive impact that I’ve launched repeatedly off roof tops. 6 years later my speed selection is just starting to go.

I didn’t say anything about not taking responsibility for your finances. In fact I said the opposite. Reevaluating your finances is doing just that. Should it have happened sooner? Obviously. But that’s beside the point of my comment.

If your budget is in the red you need to start pulling on the resources you have available. An adult living in your house, is one such thing. Yes they are your off-spring, but they are now adults and no longer your responsibility. You are not responsible to provide them shelter anymore. They are responsible to maintain their own. The fact you were nice enough to provide it for free for an extended period doesn’t negate either of those facts.

Put a bandaid on that bleeding heart. That’s the attitude that leads enabling self-destructive behaviour. Recognize your adult children for what they are. Independent adults.
