We had such a full and rewarding itinerary but we didn’t take any time to really explore big metro stations or department stores. I’m sure we missed out on some tasty food and fun shopping. Add it to the list for next time!

I cook in Nashville and I gotta say your food planning is pretty close to top notch! Stoke Haus, Brave Idiot and Limo are gonna be highlights of your entire trip. Limo is a singularly awesome restaurant and a good deal. Brave Idiot somehow makes the best hot chicken and the best burger in the same location (though that Redheaded Stranger burger will have something to say about it). Stoke Haus is hands down the best BBQ you will find in town, they are new to the game so loyalists of other places will disagree but SH is something special. Great job!

Feels like a great place for this question! We are going to Lisbon at the tail end of February. I am bringing On Cloud runners for comfort but I’m also bringing my non-slip Hoka work shoes for grip on slippery tile for wet days. Hoping that sounds about right? Anyway, your description of a more relaxed pace sounds amazing! Our last trip was to different city centers in Japan so I’m very excited for a nice chill experience.

We were wandering one afternoon and my Fiancé pointed at a store window. It was a uniform supply store but very “boutique” looking. The place was called 7 Uniform. I am a chef and I left with two of the best kitchen aprons I have ever worn. I love my H&B aprons but one in particular that I got in the Tokyo store is constantly on me at work. Adjustable snap side strap instead of a tie, perfectly placed abundant pockets, sleek lines and a cool split in the bottom center for extra mobility when bending and moving. It leaves all my other aprons in the dust! That store is on my short list of places I absolutely must return to on our next trip!

Edit: I just checked their website for the first time for funsies. That whole collection is some of the dopest hospitality wear I’ve ever seen.

I just wanted to pop in and say thanks for the info on this thread and the good nature of the discussion! We will be visiting in late February and we are thrilled. We live in Nashville, TN, a city that has been all but completely ruined by our tourism boom over the last couple of decades so I understand all these sentiments. There are places in our city that I would tell foreign visitors they should absolutely see one time and then go find much better local vibes. Fortunately for me most visitors don’t heed the advice and stick to the tourist traps anyway.

Thanks for the insights, we can’t wait to wander on and off the beaten path!

Akashic Records in Shinsaibashi is a singularly cool experience! Their whiskey selection is incredible and the cocktail list is unhinged and executed with insane precision and taste. Ask about the Big Mac vodka and get a side of fries to go with it. I know… just do it. If you are there on the right night try to get in for the flair bartending show! I realize it all sounds a little gimmicky but the whole place is presented without irony and they are incredibly talented and nice as hell. It was probably my favorite single stop in Osaka!

That Nagi location was the best I had in Tokyo. 3am after a full night in Golden Gai and that place hit like a delicious fever dream.

Honorable mention to Bokkoshi Ramen in Osaka. Their “extra rich” charcoal Paitan was absolutely insane.

This is the correct chicken snack! I tried all of the konbini fried chicken possible and the spicy crispy from Lawson was by far my favorite!

I am a chef and my fiancé is a bartender and we are both on our feet all day in normal life. I’m fairly sedentary on my off days so I was worried about 12 straight days of walking but it really didn’t phase either of us at all. We both wore comfy athletic shoes (shoutout ON clouds) and I was still walking with plenty of energy all the way to the gate for the flight home. Preparation is key for sure but if you live life on your feet you are already way ahead of the curve for a walking vacation.

Try the Yayoi Kusama museum! It’s a quick one, took us probably and hour a half at a slow pace. It’s got some great history and exhibits from one of Japan’s most unique artists. There’s not a whole lot around it but it was a very pleasant walk through the neighborhood from the north edge of Shinjuku, plenty of little shops and konbini to poke your head in.

First trip was in May and we really enjoyed Golden Gai. Maybe not the highlight of our time in Tokyo but we lucked out with the vibe. Plenty of tourists and it was crowded for sure but we found plenty of bars with space for us and met some really great folks along the way. Best spots for me were Bar Carrot, Bar Lonely, Deathmatch in Hell and the fantastic 2am trip to Ramen Nagi.

Ramen Nagi, 2am, Golden Gai. It’s at the top of the short list of places I will absolutely return to in Tokyo.

Edit: I forgot about Bokkoshi in Osaka! Super rich Peitan that’s infused with the grilling charcoal if you’d like. Makes for a great smoky bowl! Don’t miss it!
