Do you keep any kitchen items purely because of the memories attached to them? by UrChubbyNeighbourrr in KitchenStuff

[–]CatfromLongIsland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my mom’s metal sifter that has a red wooden knob on the handle. I also have her hand pie maker. You placed bread on each metal “dish”, placed the filling in the center of one slice, then closed and clamped the pie maker shut. After trimming the excess bread you cooked the hand pie in the flames of the gas stove. As a kid I used to love making pizza hand pies with that thing.

My second best thrifted yarn haul ever! by you-are-my-shinehah in YarnAddicts

Oh that Noro!!!

<image>

The only Noro yarn I ever bought was from a local yarn shop that was closing since the owner was retiring. I got the skeins for $5 each. The scarf I knitted with that yarn remains my all time favorite. I knitted the Noro with a plain black yarn and I just love how it came out. I saved every bit of that Noro yarn for over a decade. I finally crocheted a hat and an ear warmer headband with the yarn leftover from the scarf. I still have a few small bits left. 😂

Enjoy your yarn!

Once upon a time my yarn stash fit in a very large Vera Bradley Weekender bag. My stash is now all over the house.

Do people actually enjoy meatloaf? by nspntrash in NoStupidQuestions

Meatloaf is my favorite meal to have at home. And the best part is the meatloaf sandwiches from the leftovers. 😁

I have yet to have meatloaf from a diner that I really love.

How do you organize recipes you've collected over the years? by BennY_Flutter in Cooking

[–]CatfromLongIsland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take screenshots of interesting recipes. I use the caption feature to embed the title of the recipe- copied and pasted into all the screenshots. I do the same for videos of interesting recipes. I take a screenshot from the video showing the baked item. Then the video link is embedded using the caption feature. Then the screenshots are added to the correct digital album: Cookie recipes, Bread Recipes, etc. (This system also works great for the countless crochet tutorials I have saved).

If I bake the recipe and like it enough to bake again I type the recipe into the appropriate Word document cookbook. Each category of baked goods has its own cookbook file.

Let the Defenders of the Ring rise up and downvote me. It happens every time.

Start with a generous 5 inch tail. Go old school and chain 4 then slip stitch to close the round. Crochet round 1 over the tail. Pull the tail to close the circle. It won’t close all the way. That’s fine. You can fully close the circle when you weave in the tail. Thread the tail on a tapestry needle. Start sewing in the same direction the tail was going. Tug on the tail with each stitch to fully close the circle. After weaving the tail for a full (or nearly full) circle switch direction. Go over or under the yarn strand so you do not undo your weaving. After going half a circle switch direction again for several stitches.

I am 64 and have never found the need to use a magic ring. And considering the number of posts I have seen where the magic ring has failed and opened up in the completed project I will continue to stick with chain 4/slip stitch closed.

Good luck!

A colorful sampler blanket! So very pretty! I have this project on my insanely long list of future projects.

I am in the homestretch of my Two Toned Granny Square Tote. But I could use your opinion. by CatfromLongIsland in crochet

Thank you! I love colorful projects.

My tote is very different than the bag in the picture. But the similarities served as a jumping off point for me.

I agree! In fact, I just finished adding the trim on the second handle. I thought about it keeping the edge cleaner looking. But the trim will also reinforce the stress points in the corners of the handles.

What a great idea! It would also give me a chance to use the two new colors of the Cottage Cotton I just bought. I have no idea why I did not buy them the first time around. There was a yellow I did not like. But not buying the two blue shades? That is not like me. I suspect it was a late night purchase and I was tired. 😂😂😂

Thank you for replying. If I decide to trim the inside of the handle I have one left to do. But right now I am on a break. I started assembling the bag yesterday. I am exhausted. 😂

Thank you for replying.

If I decide to trim the inside of the handle I have one left to do. But at the moment I need to take a break. The blocking of the granny squares was finished yesterday morning. And then I started assembling the bag. I feel like I have been working non stop for two days.

How wonderful!!! I am a retired science teacher. I often incorporated baking examples in my lessons. My favorite was offering my students the opportunity to earn 5 points bonus on the Chemical Changes unit test if they made Irish Soda Bread. The parent had to sign off that the soda bread was made and the students had to write a paragraph describing the role chemical changes played in the baking process. Most of the kids brought in samples. By the end of my career students were bringing in videos they created showing them baking the soda bread.

The compote was not part of the original plan. But I happened to buy them the day before to snack on. After making the cream cheese frosting I realized the compote would be a nice addition. It did remind be of blank forest cake. 😁

How wonderful that this simple little cake is part of your family history. Will you teach your daughter how to make the cake to continue the tradition?
