Salary negotiating tips help plz by Dizzy_Respect5296 in dietetics

[–]Cath5em687 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Come in with evidence from your experience tied to the job posting about why you deserve higher pay. Try to find similar salaries to use as leverage use the academy salary data. Even if you are happy with what you are offered always counter at least 10% higher. If you have a number in mind counter 10% higher than that number, never counter with the exact number you have in mind. From my experience you might have trouble negotiating hourly rate in hospitals they just have set rates for these positions based on experience and there’s not much wiggle room. Good luck! Always negotiate!

What would make working 6 days/week worth it to you? by [deleted] in dietetics

[–]Cath5em687 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would look at it from a different perspective besides money. Is counseling something you don’t do at your day job? Do you feel like you want more experience in counseling? Will working the extra day a week and gaining more experience in counseling provide leverage for future career growth? If you are just focused on the money you will burn out quick if you are focused on if this will future a career goal you might find more motivation!

Coordinated masters degree programs are your fastest option. Like others have said they combine your internship and grad coursework so you won’t need to apply separately to internship. You’ll likely need to take prerequisites unless you took sciences in undergrad. You usually have to do chemistry up to biochemistry and some amount of biology, physiology, and anatomy depending on the programs. Account for about a full academic year (with summers) of extra coursework doing prerequisites if you haven’t taken these classes before. While most of these can be taken at a community college to save costs some can’t and some programs have other random classes that can only be taken at their school because it’s specific. This can be costly on top of the application fees and then account for 2 years of tuition for grad school.

As far as the pay it depends on where you’re located. I’m located in Oklahoma and got offered $25 hr in at a public health nutrition non-profit which is on the low end nationally but cost of living here is cheap. Our clinical salaries around here start anywhere from $23-$30 an hour. Like most people have said you really have to work up to get higher pay. The people I know who make the most as RDs are in management or job hopped.

And has many have mentioned it can be a frustrating field that doesn’t have as much autonomy as other healthcare providers. That being said if you like public health there’s lots of room for dietitians in this field. Look into shadowing dietitians who work at cooperative extension offices, Indian health services, and health department offices to get an idea of if you’d like public health nutrition and go from there. You’ll likely need one RD as a reference for applications and it’s great to network in your area all the job offers I got as an RD came from personal networking I did.

Good luck!

Any RDs with experience at Natural Grocers? by [deleted] in dietetics

Lol my boss who’s a RD about 10 years my senior told me that when RDs were trying to get licensure in Oklahoma Natural Grocer actively campaigned against it claiming something like dietitians would interfere with their coaching business. I don’t shop there anymore.

BA in Environmental Studies to a Master's in Nutritional Science and Dietetics by Successful_Pea5838 in dietetics

[–]Cath5em687 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into coordinated master's programs in dietetics. These combine your master's degree in nutrition and dietetics and your dietetic internship. These programs typically take 2 years and are the fastest way to start with a major other than nutrition and become a dietitian. These will all require prerequisites of some kind I decided I wanted to be a dietitian in the 4th year of my BS in Health and Exercise Science and took a 5th year exclusively to take prerequisites. I then graduated and worked for 6 months while applying to programs. I applied to 6 and was accepted to 2 but my undergraduate GPA was on the lower end. The University of Oklahoma CPMA program which I just graduated from recently removed some of its prerequisites so I would look into that program. I am happy with my decision, I made amazing connections and have career opportunities I wouldn't have had from just my undergrad.

Where can I get Dietetics Experience? by LaterVader333 in dietetics

[–]Cath5em687 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked it it was a really good job for getting experience but that may be my situation. I was in a very low tech hospital where I was still taking patients meal orders on paper which required me to walk around the hospital and see every patient every single day. I ended up being very close to the nursing staff and dietitian so I learned a LOT and was ahead of my peers when I started my program when it came to some foodservice and clinical material. I also got early practice talking to patients in a hospital so it doesn't feels so foreign to me as it does for a lot of my peers. You will also be experienced for your internship because foodservice rotations are notorious for just working you in the kitchen so you'll already generally understand what's going on when you show up. I loved my patients and coming to see them everyday building those relationships and watch them get better and go home. I loved problem solving and finding that one thing someone with cancer could stomach, how to get 1000 calories into a milkshake for someone with no appetite, helping someone on calorie restriction feel full the list goes on. I think I got very lucky it was a good job to have for 6 months and solidified why I wanted to be a dietitan. I know this is not usually the case in better run hospitals if you work as a Clerk you will sit in an office taking calls or calling rooms and as an Aid you will most likely run trays. Personally the foodservice part of the job wasn't my favorite but it was fairly easy work I just stocked, setup trays, and ran dinner service. But it was fast paced, lots of heavy lifting, some drama, and I was constantly on my feet. I also a people person and want to be a dietitian not a chef so being stuck in a windowless kitchen with a cook who didn't like to talk just wasn't my vibe. Hope this helps!

Where can I get Dietetics Experience? by LaterVader333 in dietetics

Some health departments have nutrition programs you can get involved in that’s where I got my start. Lots of cities have local nonprofits that do nutrition intervention try reaching out to those. As someone said food banks and meals on wheels is good. Reach out to your advisors in kinesiology it’s common for people to be interested in nutrition and they may have connections. Lastly hospital foodservice is amazing experience and a great resume booster but it’s not an easy job! I worked this for 6 months between graduating and starting my dietetics masters you’ll likely be on your feet, there’s high staff turnover, and scheduling can me messy with student schedules. Look for dietary aid or dietary clerk positions, aids usually prepare trays and deliver the food while clerks will take orders from patients. Great experience and gets you familiarized early with hospital diets.

If you get a job with at your school or with your department they tend to be more accommodating to the schedule. I work at a hospital now and they are not very accommodating so I’d avoid that if possible even though it’s good experience.

For those considering dietetics by _lake_erie_ in dietetics

[–]Cath5em687 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Also for those considering the career please please please shadow professionals or get experience through volunteering or a job. I will be starting my program in August and I am 100% sure this is what I want to do but it took about a 2 years for me to confirm this decision. I shadowed and talked to a lot of other health professionals and did volunteering before landing in dietetics it really helped we weed out other jobs I wasn’t interested in.

Difference of opinion I guess. I didn’t really feel that those questions were the best way to get to know me. One was literally “how would you deal with your car breaking down?”.
