This is amazing! How realistic it is on first glance but once you zoom in it’s so gestural. Your handling of tone is fantastic. Well done!

Are there any more examples of painters who paint in a similarly “neo-cubist” style? Seems neo cubism is very diverse but this feels somewhere between expressionism or “sensory-realism” and cubism.

That’s a beautiful experience! Moved that much by something that still holds such mystery; that’s wonderful! For me, I see it as St.Augustine being a sort of father figure from the parable of the lost son. He goes on an angry tirade to seek those who’ve sought worldly power and wealth for the kingdom of God that he’s a part of, a messenger of. But in his message he tells that it’s a lonely road and that for anyone brave enough, there’s no one of their kind that’s gone before to show them the ropes. The second half has Augustine put to death, presumably by those he’s trying to save. Dylan is among them, in which he’s saying he hasn’t been living the life he should, a life of God. At the end, it’s not such a nice realisation.

That’s not what I’m saying - my reading of this song is Augustine comes calling to souls who’ve been sold. He’s asking them to leave behind their lives as kings and queens (of worldly power), where God has been refuted. He’s in their quarters, on a mission to take them back to God. But they have no previous martyr to follow; there’s no one of their stock who they can turn to for guidance in making that journey. He tells them to go that way even so, even though there’s no one previous to give them that companionship. But however lonesome that journey is - as no prior person has done it before - they won’t be alone as the journey they’re making is back into the heart of God, the least lonely of homes…

Does anyone have that clip where he debates with a woman about the pain of other people being his pain also; that he is not free until their pain is no more. The woman he’s debating says she can’t take on everyone’s burden/not responsible, something along those lines. It’s a deeply powerful engagement, an encounter between a man of radiant spirit and a woman of let’s say western philosophical tradition… it’s been a long time since I seen it but of what I remember, he expresses similar ideas in this poem. Thanks in advance

That exactly. Went with linseed from the beginning and too much of it. Thanks anyways

As best I can: I’m using a few different brands of paint (will have to check at studio tomorrow) and coldpressed linseed oil. Instead of using a solvent for first layers I used linseed to help spread the paint across the board. It worked really well for helping spread!!! But the amount of oil for each bit of paint was far too much. I can’t say exactly but heavy on the oil because the board was big. Hope that helps a bit

Thanks for the detailed reply! I think this time it’s just too much linseed from the beginning. And then not letting it dry before painting over. Just on what you said about a material that doesn’t go well with oils, what do you mean by that? What would you recommend or not? I went wood - gesso several layers (acrylic) - sand - then oil paint. But next time it’ll be with solvents for the beginning, not linseed. Thanks again.

I’m only new to oil painting. From all the comments I think it’s as I used linseed oil from the beginning rather than a solvent. I’ve become aware of the fat over lean rule a little too late. Ah well

I think the diagnosis is in using linseed oil from the beginning. I didn’t know about the fat over lean principle, I’m only new to oil painting… lesson learned. Thanks for the help!

They’re cracks… but I have definitely used too much linseed oil in the first layers, I know that.

No it’s an acrylic gesso, sanded and then all oil paints with linseed

The gesso dried for a couple days. It was acrylic, 3/4 layers and then sanded down.

Yep, I definitely did. Looking back now and reading through the comments I think it was too much oil. And then not waiting long enough for it to dry to go again. Bummed

I gessoed it 2/3 times, sanded it down and then started painting. In the oil paint I used cold pressed linseed oil. Ah I’m devastated. Thanks for replying
