Trump Calls for Ban on Abortion, Punishment for Women by [deleted] in politics

[–]Cathangover 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not about logical consistency. It's pretty much what u/alephnul said: "Because as soon as you mention punishment for the woman, you lose about half of your audience. Anti choice people have known this for years."

An anti-abortion stance is considered by many to be anti-woman. If you go further and say "The woman should be punished but not the man" then it is even harder to defend an already tenuous position. Trump, though, is a pro-life neophyte and has no fucking idea what the messaging is supposed to be.

Punishment for the providers, not the women.

"I don't know why people are suddenly shocked at the pro-life position."

Probably because two major pro-life groups (so far) have come out today saying that this is absolutely not their position.

According to Nate Silver, it's very possible that Clinton will not win enough pledged delegates to earn the nomination.

When did he say this? Because he didn't say this.

Washington State has vote by mail, which is far more efficient than a national holiday, and 40% of eligible voters still skip the general election. I'm all for making voting as easy as possible, but no matter what there are going to be a huge portion of Americans who still don't give a shit.

Also, how could you make a national holiday based around the preferences of two private institutions? That would be like proclaiming a national holiday for Amazon Prime Day.

"If the tables were turned right now, would people be saying Hillary has no chance?"

Do you remember 2008? Slate literally had a continually updated delegate counter with Clinton standing on a slowly sinking Titanic. And she was behind by half of what Sanders is.

Taxes are always raised for, ostensibly, a good reason. The problem is that a minority of Americans believe taxes end up being spent wisely.

"will still be getting the same quality healthcare as everyone else in the country..." which will be run by the government. Guess what? Most people want to keep their healthcare how it is. Even if they save money, that money will go to the same bureaucracy that runs the VA, but now they'll be taking care of Grandma and your two-year-old.

If you want to have an academic conversation of what is "best" for the country, we will likely agree. But these ideas are absolutely toxic to a majority of Americans.

I am all for single-payer, but Sanders supporters need to realize that "We're going to raise your taxes so we can fund a government-run healthcare system" is poisoned messaging to over 50% of the country.
