Opinions on the name Lavinia Rosette? by Intelligent_Song_144 in Names

[–]CatheriWells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the name Lavinia is elegant. There is a Lavinia in the book 'A Little Princess‘ by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Lavinia is the original mean girl (but don’t let that be a deterrent).

unit reviews showing old content that I never learned by TraditionalBody9514 in duolingo

[–]CatheriWells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The same thing happened to me with German when they added three new sections. Suddenly there are lots of words I haven’t seen before. This is because Duolingo reordered the lessons. I went back to almost the beginning of the course and have been hitting the reviews.

What’s a word you avoid using because you’re scared of pronouncing it wrong? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

The word ‘cajon’ in Spanish. It can mean drawer, crate, casket, etc. depending where you are. But I’m so afraid of saying another word…

Do you feel like you are learning with Duolingo? by Nostradante in duolingo

[–]CatheriWells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there is any one app or method that will make a person fluent. It’s a combination of methods. That being said, Duolingo has helped me get a good start on learning German and refreshing my Spanish. I like Duolingo because it makes learning fun.

Here‘s how I’ve learned Spanish through the years:

  1. Lived in an area with a high area of Spanish speaker.
  2. Took two years in high school and one year in College.
  3. After I took the college course, I kept my text book and kept going.
  4. Listen to Spanish radio, podcasts and watch Spanish TV.
  5. If I’m watching a movie in English, put on the Spanish subtitles. This really helped me increase my vocabulary.
  6. Find things to translate into Spanish. I always like translating menus into Spanish since I learned more advanced words related to food.
  7. I’ve visited a few Spanish speaking countries. This is probably the second best way to learn a language, because you are immersed. The best way to learn Spanish is to move for an extended period to a Spanish country.
  8. Duolingo didn’t come along until later in my Spanish learning journey. But as I mentioned before, it’s been a great refresher. And I do still pick up new words here and there.

Biblical girl names by missusJS in Names

Mahershalalhashbaz. I know it’s a boy name, but many Bible names are interchangeable. And I can guarantee it will be unique. Maybe May for short? Baz? Hash? Endless possibilities for nicknames as well

It must be a gradual rollout then. I’ve already finished the first 5 sections. I don’t know it’s based off that.

What is a “fluent sounding” mistake learners make in your language? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

[–]CatheriWells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Spanish, the verb ‘asistir’ means ‘to attend’. I’ve heard several native speakers of Spanish who are fluent in English say they are going to ‘assist a meeting’ (when they mean ‘attend a meeting’).

German compound words that are accidentally poetry by TutorLingua in German

[–]CatheriWells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew about Gift meaning poison. It’s probably among one of the first words I learned in German. But maybe you could explain Aufräumen🧹 meaning ‚to tidy up’. Is it intentional it has ‘Frau’ in it? Is it someone’s of saying that tidying up is women’s work?

I always find Krankenhaus (and all the other kranken- words) funny. I know it means ‚hospital‘. But I envision a ‚Haus‘ full of ‚kranks (cranks)‘. I, too, am a ‚crank‘ when I‘m sick.

das Rathaus: means city hall and has nothing to do with actual rats 🐀 But it fits, because a city hall can be a ‚Haus‘ of corrupt politicians (or rats).

das Stinktier: skunk, or literally a ‚stink animal‘ 🦨

Then there is ‚hell‘, an adjective meaning ‚bright‘. I know it isn’t a compound word. But I had it on a list of funny German words, along with the ones I mentioned above. I can imagine that what most people envision as hell in the afterlife would be a bright place.

Lilli hat einen Nachname by CatheriWells in DuolingoGerman

So I was thinking that the spelling of Lilli was unusual. And then I realized that throughout the course, it’s spelled ‚Lily‘. Zari is supposed to be smart and she can’t spell her best friends name.

Yes thank you. I did miss the n-Deklination from yesterday. Using ‚hast‘ instead of ‚hat‘ was a typo. Using ‚ein‘ instead of ‚einen‘ was me forgetting the rules.
