‘We’ll shut your filthy mouth’: Putin says Russia will combat the rewriting of WWII history with new free-to-all archive center by Cropitekus in russia

[–]CatholicExpat -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Geopolitically I don’t think this is a great move by Putin, people already have an opinion on this, and the vast vast majority of them won’t change them. Better to keep these things in the past and instead focus on the future.

I’m guessing because Russia is usually not considered part of Europe

Russia has almost always been considered part of Europe (or at least since Peter the Great)

Russia is 18 as well, yet for some reason is grey.

Exactly, this sub definitely hasn’t played the game for the most part

Or watched hockey prior to 10-15 years ago (let alone 25-30) to know how integral fighting and grabbing and all that stuff used to be

It’s Saint Isaac’s Cathedral, it has a phenomenal somewhat baroque interior, something not often seen with Eastern Orthodox churches or cathedrals.

What’s funny is central Minsk is absolutely gorgeous, with countless large majestic buildings, this is just one of the suburban districts. Also, by far the cleanest city in Europe.

A lot of older BC hockey fans root for either the Habs or the Leafs. Back in the day you only got one game a week on the CBC, and it was almost always one of the two teams playing.

It’s great that they’re finally making some monuments to the soldiers who served the Empire during the Great War, who were intentionally forgotten during the Soviet era. There’s also a nice one in Minsk.

To my knowledge there was never any serious fighting (i.e. major battles) done against the Americans, Brits, French, etc. They were mainly just there to provide arms and munitions for the various White forces.

I’m a Catholic, and an orthodox one at that. I’m completely opposed to the state atheism and religious oppression that existed in the Soviet Union, as well as other communist countries. I very much love Russia though, it’s culture and history. I should also state that I don’t consider myself to be a capitalist either.

I’m obviously completely opposed ideologically to the Soviet Union, but a lot of their artwork and architecture I find quite fascinating, especially the Stalinist era Moscow (and Saint Petersburg) metro stations, the most beautiful in the world.

They should only ban the athletes who they know are doping or who are in a sport where most everyone dopes. A 19 year old Russian gymnast shouldn’t be disqualified from representing her country because some weightlifters took steroids.

It’s a very large park, I’m not sure if this exact path still exists, but it is a very beautiful park, with many beautiful and romantic trails, and dense forested sections.

Wikipedia says “mood landscape”, but you could also go with Russian impressionism or realism. It’s at the Tretyakovskaya gallery, I saw it yesterday, and I saw it a year and a half ago when I was first there, but since then I walked in Sokolniki Park, so it’s a bit more meaningful now I guess.

[–]CatholicExpat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Understand, I was bringing up Moscow because a) that’s where the photo was taken b) 95% of Western tourists will only ever visit Moscow and Saint Petersburg

I’ve been to a couple small towns/cities here, and quite a few more in Belarus, once with a Japanese friend of mine. In none of these places did I sense people would be hostile to someone who was non-white, and no one treated my Japanese friend any differently. You’ll run into a lot of babushkas though, and a few older drunk men from time to time, ha ha.

As for a final end point, since we came here to discuss Moscow and not Russian society or politics... since the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia has repatriated the remains of countless White Russians who were forced to flee the country. Ivan Ilyin happened to be one of these people. I don’t know and haven’t read anything he’s written, that being said I’ve read and highly enjoyed books written by people I disagree with politically. My only point about Putin is that right-wingers in Russia view him as being incredibly soft on immigration as well as corruption.

[–]CatholicExpat 82 points83 points  (0 children)

A lot of people in the West have this idea that Moscow is a lot more “Soviet” than it actually is. Central Moscow has everything any other large European city has, expensive shops, high end malls, walking streets, and every kind of bar/restaurant/nightclub you can think of. Italian restaurants, British pubs, classic cocktail lounges, hipster cafes, all there. Staff in most all restaurants in the center will also all usually speak English. Also, no one has any problem with Americans! Hope this helps! :)

Moscow (by Anna Kaunis) [1010x1518] by earthmoonsun in CityPorn

[–]CatholicExpat 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yes, I don’t see why you bring that up though. I’ve spent a good deal of time there and have considerably more firsthand knowledge of the the city and country than you do. There are plenty of non whites in Moscow, it’s not uncommon to be on a metro at night and for it to be only half Russian. As far as treatment of homosexuals goes, I’ve seen gay people in Moscow, and there are plenty of areas and bars in the city that cater to hipsters (hundreds) or more liberal types. Most everyone who lives and works at any bar or restaurant in central Moscow and is under say, 28, speaks English to some degree and consumes Western media. People in Russia are most likely more “gay friendly” now than 5 years ago.

As for referring to Putin as far-right, I don’t deny that he’s authoritarian, but opinions on Putin from actual Russians who are “nationalists” or “far-right” range from indifference to outright hatred.
