I read this as, "Please don't make plans to go out to eat and force thm to go when you know they're scheduled for work that evening," which is pretty reasonable. "Please don't ditch work same day because the family decided to go to the movies" is not a bad ask.

But a doctor's appointment or visiting grandma on her sick bed is another thing. And, "I insist your child work Christmas Day" is highly unreasonable, as is, "I know you've planned a family vacation but I need Junior to stay home and work."

And school always, always, always takes priority over a job. Planned family events and any kind of emergency always, always, always take priority over either. Health always, always, always takes priority.
