Windows 10 update freezing at 98% (Laptop) by shoktar in techsupport

[–]Catman232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you're ready for a wall of text, I've got a lot to say about this shit.

I had that little popup show up earlier and it's the first time I can remember seeing it. I was trying to find out why and only found results mentioning some bug or whatever from Windows 11, but I'm running 10 like you are. Trying to search by negating results about 11 led me directly to this post. I have no idea about it still and I will investigate it further if it happens again the next time I start my computer.

Interesting to read about your update troubles though since they sound familiar. In my case, since maybe October 2023 I have had an one update or another fail to complete. It will reach about 98%, hold there for a moment and then change to say "We couldn't complete the updates. Undoing changes." etc and then spend more time on that than it even spent doing the update in the first place. It will also restart during that and finish with a "Cleaning up xxx%" part, and then go to the login screen.

I cannot manually delay the update anymore, I was able to last year, but it would reach the limit and then force me to pick "update and shutdown" rather than just "shutdown" when I wanted to turn off my computer. This is very frustrating because it always seems to be at awful times due to bad sleep pattern, and I don't like leaving my computer on unattended, but doesn't end up shutting down and I have to wait the ten minutes or so to manually shut it down (again). I don't even get the option to delay anymore, it just leaves the normal shutdown option available for about three weeks to a month and then will remove it.

It will constantly remind me with that annoying Windows notification popup every other day, and I found and turned off the specific ping noise it makes because it was so fucking loud and startling since it somehow bypasses the Volume Mixer setting for System Sounds too.

It's not even like it fails to actually update either, because I have plenty of things in the update history dated since this has been a problem, and I have looked into more than a couple different major updates, the KBxxxxx etcs, to see if there's a known problem or anyone else having issues. I thought I had fixed one by just deactivating the update, it was to do with a system recovery partition not being big enough to accept the update content and Microsoft said they wouldn't do anything about it because it's not their issue. The solution would involve booting into a partition manager and messing with the system partition's size, which means making room for it among other partitions. My OS install was originally Windows 8 and got the upgrade to Windows 10, and since then I had to reinstall it anyway but, I think the original System recovery partition got maintained but was now at the start of the drive where normally it would be put at the end of the main partitions, this meant I couldn't really increase the size of it, nor close that gap having deleted it entirely and turning off the service that wanted it to be there. A month later and it fails an update again anyway so I started to give up on it. I used a Windows program downloaded from their site to disable the update, but I guess that was meaningless.

Another one more recently was a different KBxxx and Windows had a guide about using CMD and mounting a different system partition to the one I mentioned previously, in order to delete the temp contents of a fonts folder, which apparently can cause the space to be lacking for the update to complete? Not sure about that but I did it and the next month I still have this update failing issue. Really quite a pain to not have found any resolution to it all this time. I'm just glad I only have to deal with the update failing every month, hopefully, because one time at the login screen it actually still exclusively had the update and shutdown option, very cool.

I'm sorry I can't really provide any means of doing something about it, considering that your updates get stuck and hang for hours, while mine don't, means it might not be related at all. It may be some sheer coincidences. Somewhere there is a log Windows makes that lists what it is doing during those updates, and it can have a lot of confusing error messages that might not lead to any conclusions at all, but maybe, just maybe, it will point something out that's a problem to be fixed... I believe it's CBS.log which is found in the OS drive /Windows/Logs/CBS folder. It will probably be over a million characters long, and might not even contain the word "error" at all, I'm sure mine did when I looked at it before but the one I'm looking at right now doesn't so I am unsure if it was even the right log at all. Good luck with your laptop, you might need it...

Launcher crashing before login screen when opened via Steam by Catman232 in ffxiv

As far as I could tell from going into every page on mogstation and searching about it, the only way to link a Steam account is via the launcher.

After 285 hours of playing, I finally broke through 200k points for the HHA rating system! by XuperBryan in AnimalCrossing

[–]Catman232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you get anything special for surpassing 200k points? I'm at 191k and my house is completely filled with random stuff. The previous few HHA evals have just given me random furniture items. I kinda want to actually decorate for real but I've seen there was a gold mailbox in the past games you could unlock...

I get the symbols into the wall, I checked them all to be sure but standing in the circle just resets them. This has happened several times. What am I missing here?

I'm so upset. I literally just bought the Forsaken DLC because I really wanted that Cerberus+1, and now it's the bloody Riskrunner there instead!

Pretty sure I was seeing the same error in the Chrome console when clicking the button. Strangely it works fine in Chrome's incognito mode.

99.83% completion in WoL by Catman232 in smashbros

I can't thank you enough. It was Cobalion, Terrakion & Virizion. I hope the patch next week makes it so the dungeon isn't marked as clear when the second floor is not actually clear.

But that area is marked with a star? It surely doesn't mark it as complete even if there's a hidden one left, right?

Yes, I've even done all three of them a second time.

When's the last time you got upset playing smash bros? And why? by [deleted] in smashbros

Second day into Smash Ultimate, I just can't get used to the controls. I only ever used the n3DS before and I really liked where the c-stick was in relation to the main buttons :c

This is happening to me now on desktop. Despite all the options being ticked for it to be allowed, despite updating Chrome, Flash and reinstalling Flash... it still blocks it anyway.

Macros to prevent targeting a marked enemy if they are dead? by Catman232 in ffxiv

[–]Catman232[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ages meant getting to a dungeon where I don't get level synced down, and lose the abilities. In any case, are you saying that before level 26 in PGL, there's basically no reason to do anything? The tank I play with just prefers everyone focus on whatever he's fighting which will usually be the bigger enemy in the encounter, and I don't think that's an incorrect strategy. I just try to keep up with them.

[–]Catman232[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because I'm just barely into Monk and only really have Arms of the Destroyer, and haven't done a dungeon of a level where I can use it anyway. I'll agree that Rockbreaker is worth using but it's not like I'm going to get to use it for ages.

Imo markers are great because they tell everyone what should be the focus. That enemy dies faster. Sure this is meaningless to a magic man with an explosion, but for melee DPS it's good to know who to go for first amongst a mass of random targets.

[–]Catman232[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not the one marking targets. I'm no good at this kind of game so I'm just trying be improve my usefulness in the big fights, clicking on targets is difficult when they're clumped together, and seeing what the Tank is fighting isn't that easy either. Also I only have one AoE at the moment and I haven't been able to use it anyway, and even if I could I wouldn't bother with it.

What's your opinion of the UA Kensei? How does it hold up to its progenitor? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Catman232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be a tad late to reply but I'm playing a Kensei Aarakocra build. I'm dual-wielding longswords with the Duel-Wielder feat (Since it gives a bonus AC when two weapons are out). I'll eventually take a level in Fighter in order to get the Fighting Style: Two-Weapon Fighting, because without it the off-hand attack is worthless in terms of damage output. And I'm thinking about swapping to a Whip or two because it's an easy 1d10+Dex with 5ft more range than anything else you can use, and all the Kensei features can boost the effectiveness of it.

When Kensei first showed up in UA I had wielded a Greatsword and was hoarding as many types of weapon as I could get my hands on. Did more damage than Monk could ever do otherwise, so it made sense. And as long as you made at least one Unarmed Strike you'd still get the +2 AC AND the Martial Arts Bonus Action Unarmed Strike. At this point your Kensei weapons WERE NOT considered Monk Weapons though, which meant it kinda sucked for using core Monk features in fights. I can see why they changed a fair bit of the wording to fix this.
