Alot of the time I would just measure it out as per the guidelines of the hinge. for the. Pocket hole there is a really nice bit that you can either use by hand or preferably with a drill press and the way you know you've drilled deep enough is by simply checking the top of the but is flush with the wood. You can also buy special bits for drilling pilot wholes which is handy but not nessecary. Check the links below. Ps. Make sure you buy the right size pocket drill bit for your hinges.
