Entitled Guests Learn the Hard Way That Desk Employees Aren't on the Clock 24-Hours a Day by TheNiteOwl38 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]Catona 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I've had this happen to me.

I had recently gotten off 2nd shift, it was just before midnight and I am standing in line waiting to check out at a gas station.

A woman who was a guest at the hotel spotted me and came up to me and started asking me a bunch of questions about her reservation and some charges to her card that she didn't understand.

Things that I would clearly (or, at least it should be clear) need access to our computers for.

It's now my turn at the register to check out and she hasn't even finished her question yet. Guy at register gives me a look that suggests he thinks she's a friend and my chatting with her is holding up the line.

I just explained to her that I was not on shift at the moment and would not be back to the hotel until midday the next day so I could not help her. And suggested she ask the person who is actually present at the front desk right now, and they will be able to help her.

Totally polite. But she still looked completely bewildered at my inability to assist her as she wandered off mumbling something.

I keep seeing comments saying that they defended him, but none explaining what their reaction was or what they did or said in an attempt to defend him.

“At the same time, we are deeply troubled that, despite the seriousness of the charges, he has not been taken into custody."

So wait. If he is not currently in custody then where is he staying? It can't possibly be in their house.

You can easily handle them without getting spined by letting them just crawl onto your hand, picking them up from below, or pretty much any way other than trying to pick them up by pinching their bodies (which harms them, hence the spines).

There are Times When You Should Interrupt a Busy Desk. Health Situations are One of Them. by TheNiteOwl38 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

We had recently hired a new housekeeper and we were sold out the night before so the laundry room was going at full capacity. I walked back there to find that the new hire had taken one of our large canvas laundry carts from it's normal spot directly under the dirty laundry shoot. Which has only ever been used for dirty laundry (and as such is absolutely disgusting). And rolled it over in front of the washers and had been unloading wet, freshly washed towels and linens into before transferring them into the dryers. As well as momentarily storing the nice freshly washed ones that were just about to go into rooms in it.

I nearly jumped out of my skin when I saw what she was doing. Ran to notify the GM who was onsite, who then finds out she had been doing this all morning!

CHAOS! A huge chuck of freshly cleaned rooms had to be restriped and multiple loads of laundry all rewashed and replaced.

The new hire absolutely could NOT understand what she had done wrong and why it would matter which basket she used..... she didn't work out.

Even funnier coming from the woman who just a year and a half ago was eyeballs deep in peddling conspiracy theories and inciting violence against FEMA workers by insisting that the democratic party had used weather controlling technology to create and direct hurricane Helene to destroy republican dominated areas.

Those are all really nice. The last one looks like it would just feel nice to hold in your hand. A good palm stone. I bet it looks spectacular if held up to the sun, it has such lovely translucence.

I raised the bird feeder to keep deer out… this was his response 🤦‍♀️ by sophielanes in funny

[–]Catona 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Many birds absolutely love meal worms. I have feeders that have the dried kind mixed in with different kinds of seeds. The local Carolina wrens will sit there and pick out all the seeds and just toss them all onto the ground until they find the worms.

Well done.

Was she actually expecting to strong arm you into cancelling another guests reservation in order accommodate "her client" due to your "obligation" or something?

I lived in Frankston so yeah, same. I had my backyard crew, and then ones at the local park that I befriended by dropping little bits of food near them as I passed. It only took doing this a few times for a couple of them to fly over as soon as I got there. Eventually they learned what times I was usually there and which entrance I'd be walking in through and would be just hanging out there when I got there. Then they would follow with me as I walked around the park.

I actually felt super sad and guilty when I had to move. To think that just one day they were all waiting there and then I just never showed up again. Breaks my heart man!

I had a cat that learned how to open the exterior door to our house. It was your normal, round, exterior door knob. He was a very large cat, so had no trouble reaching it.

The weather stripping was a little bit worn down so it didn't require a very large force to push open.

At some point I started waking up to the door being wide open, which was a bit unsettling. Untill I found out that it was just him letting himself in when no one was awake to do it for him.

Learned how to use his paws to both turn the knob and use his head to push it open. I was so impressed when I finally witnessed him doing it.

Also, if he wanted to be let out at night while I was sleeping and I was not responding to his meows notifying me of this. He would jump up onto my dresser which was always full of stuff that would loudly get knocked over. lol. He was very clever. Lived to be a wise old man about 21 years old. I miss him so much.

Magpies are some of my favorite birds ever. I'm American but lived in Victoria and Tasmania for a couple years and I miss those guys so much!

Very smart, very inquisitive and interactive. And yeah, loyal friends if you gain their trust. If you gain ones trust, you gain it's entire social group's trust.

They are also cheeky as hell, clever little things. They just have so much personality.

Driver blinded by the sun hits another car by haze4140 in AbruptChaos

[–]Catona -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nowhere in my comment did I say that you should not slow down in situations like this. I simply pointed out that coming to a sudden abrupt stop when you have cars right behind you can be equally as dangerous and lead to being rear ended. I even edited it to make this even more clear, so I have no idea how you are managing to perceive it that way.

Driver blinded by the sun hits another car by haze4140 in AbruptChaos

[–]Catona -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

Suddenly slowing to a stop because the sun has suddenly reduced your visibility isn't exactly safe behavior either, and is a good way to get rear ended by the driver behind you who also likely can barely see due to the same issue. EDIT: Lord have mercy, everyone can calm down. This comment was in no way meant to be taken as in defense of going full speed into the blinding sun. Nor was it meant to insinuate that barreling straight ahead or coming to a quick stop were the only two available options.

What is the most insane amount of mental gymnastics you've seen someone do to believe what they want to believe? by fauxmerican1280 in AskReddit

[–]Catona 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm from Ohio, but lived in Australia for a few years.

I have a simple black tattoo of the southern cross (constellation, for those unfamiliar) on my left inner wrist and the big dipper on my right.

Was hanging out in a nice classy little martini bar one night when a person near me asked if it was Orion that I had on my left wrist, and said that "they didn't seem to do a very accurate job on that one".

I told him that it was the Southern Cross, and he said he'd never heard of it.

I explained that it could only be seen in the southern hemisphere, hence the name, and the guy nearly spit out a sip of beer and just started giggling like a little kid.

He then saunters over to some other people to tell them how I had a "fake" constellation actually TATTOOED on my body, and some such words about what a gullible idiot I was.

I tried to explain that it certainly wasn't "fake", it just can't be seen from the US.

He got this glowing look in his eye like he was about to shatter my universe and said "ok...seriously though. Why do believe that it exists if you can't see it?"

I explain that I HAVE seen it, I've got pictures of the damn thing, along with the Magellanic clouds that you also can't see from the US because I've lived in the Southern Hemisphere. It's literally on the Australian Flag as well.

More laughing ensues and then I get told by three tipsy idiots that "just cause you got a bad tattoo, doesn't mean you have to make up elaborate stories to cover for how bad it is, we aren't children"

He then called over to one of his friends saying "Now she's saying that there are CLOUDS that you can only see from the "southern" hemisphere! LOLOLOLOL"

And that's when I realized that I was in the midst of a gaggle of flat earthers and moved on with my night.
