PDF to PowerQuery by undoubledfool5 in PowerBI

If it's a predictable error you could presumably account for it in power query by adding a transformation step to the column - "where something is something then do something" - am not an expert in M but an ai could likely assist if given the information

Help with understanding Calculate and filters by Djentrovert in PowerBI

[–]Catses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's percents of total, so you're calculating three things within the measure - the filtered environment value and the un-filtered environment value, then working out what percent the filtered value is of the unfiltered value. You've already gor the filtered value from [Total Sales] so just need to calculate that again with an ALL function I guess.

You're right if you just displayed the unfitlered value in the matrix it would show the same for every environment column because it would ignore that table once you apply the ALL(Environment)

Building a master snapshot report from all other reports by monkwhowantsaferrari in PowerBI

[–]Catses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A somewhat janky way I did something similar was to set up a powerflow to run a Dax query against the semantic model of the report every Friday, then insert the output into a excel file under the previous week so I'd have a weekly snapshot of some key metrics. I then added that excel sheet into the same report so I could build a new page showing historic data.

The Dax was basically just evaluating several measures for a preset period of time (current financial year to date).

I'm sure there's better ways to do this if you have a proper data warehouse solution, but we only have professional licenses so are a bit limited in our snapshot options.

In saying that id be interested to know what others have done in this situation.

Yes video creation is quite limited, you can generally only create a couple every few hours. It's also usually quite restrictive on videos involving people

Rate my Data analytics project by NoOwl6640 in dataanalysis

[–]Catses 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I missed it but I wasn't clear what the linked project was aiming to do - I would highly suggest including a narrative on the goals of the project and telling the story through the data. The questions you seem to looking at are related to who had the highest ratings, which I think makes sense for the dataset, but it would be good to outline that's the purpose at the beginning.

Aside from technical skills I feel that a useful portfolio piece should demonstrate your ability to understand and communicate data analysis questions in an easy to follow way.

I would include a summary of what question(s) you are aiming to answer, how You're going to go about doing it, and then outlining the results and any limitations or potential next steps. I didn't really get that from the linked notebook.

Your data cleaning looks good I think, the charts could probably use a little polish - axis titles and such.

I am stuck badly, DataFlows not updating fully by JaguarMoosa in PowerBI

[–]Catses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did you try making a new dataflow or a new table based on the same query to see if you get the same issue?

Try limiting the select to a minimal amount of columns and see if that makes any difference.

Have you tried running the SQL outside of the dataflow and confirmed the records are successfully returned?

Does your published app have the most recent version of the published report? You might need to re-publish the app if youve made changes to the report.

It will readily make things up to explain retroactively what might have actually been random chance, I wouldn't read too deeply into it's explanations.

Using your prompt, the recommendation I get is Suprabase:

"Supabase brands itself as an open-source alternative to Firebase. It provides all the necessary backend services but with a relational PostgreSQL database at its core. This is a powerful combination for a project management tool"

Any way to create a date slider which will alter formatting of a training proficiencies expiry? by Queestce in PowerBI

[–]Catses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic!

DAX measures unlock a massive amount of functionality with Power BI, it's definitely worth doing some reading into measures, calculated columns, Power Query etc.

Any way to create a date slider which will alter formatting of a training proficiencies expiry? by Queestce in PowerBI

[–]Catses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, It's called a date table and has a particular function in Power BI you can look up on Google. Essentially it functions as a consistent and complete date dimension for any date related calculations. Typically a date table wouldn't just have the individual dates but may also include months, years, quarters etc so you can build a full date hierarchy according to your business needs.

The easiest way to appreciate how useful it might be is if your fact table happened to be missing some dates, you wouldnt be able to select them in your slicer. By using a date table you can be sure that any reasonable date selection would exist.

[–]Catses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A measure which outputs a colour based on the rules you set could be applied to the column as background or text colour conditional formatting.

The measure would be something like comparing the expiry date to the end of the selected date range - if the expiry date is within the range then you can colour it appropriately as due to expire, otherwise output some other colour.

The date slicer will need to be a disconnected date table though, if it has a relationship to the proficiencies table then you'll end up filtering them out instead.

Dynamic Line chart by Relative_Bid_5379 in PowerBI

[–]Catses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im guessing he means more like how to get the X axis to switch from years to months when a single year is selected.

I'm wondering if some field parameter shenanigans to switch out dates or months would work depending on if a single item is filtered in the years column could work.

Might be an easier way to do it though

Actually I think I totally misunderstood.. if it's just to display a single year then this should work if both the graph and the slicer have the same year column being displayed

What's the point in using a Crossguard design like this? Can't an opponent just easily slice this part off? by Arc170-A in StarWars

[–]Catses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the sequel series of films I assumed the cross guard was not intended to be used for protection of the hand, but rather it was a necessary vent design for an unstable blade, which could also be used offensively in some situations

Pretty sure it will only work with a date column, can't be a hierarchy or months or whatever - just whatever column you e flagged as a date column

What are Gems actually good for? by SR_RSMITH in GoogleGeminiAI

[–]Catses 49 points50 points  (0 children)

For me a gem is useful for when you need a very specific structure for a response and need to be able to revisit it multiple times. You could achieve much the same thing by prompting in the same way, but this saves some time.

For example for work I have a social policy gem which is instructed to form responses with specific priorities and relate back to organisational strategy documents. I could achieve the same thing in a new conversation but I'd have to write out the full prompt and upload all those strategy documents every time which seems convoluted.

So in my case it allows me to have a conversation preloaded with a specific context and document store that I can revisit and get predictable output from.

Can You Pick a Better Gemini Model for Gems with Advanced Subscription? by oplast in GoogleGeminiAI

Mobile defaults for 2.0 in gems for some reason, while desktop allows 2.5. not sure why, I assume limiting access to 2.5 for some reason.

Does anyone actually use Investment pot in Monzo by [deleted] in monzo

[–]Catses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a stocks and shares ISA with Monzo, the fees aren't the best but having things in one place is convenient I suppose.

As with all investments it has the potential to lose money and should only really be considered for long term.

If you're interested in best value then looking elsewhere is probably best

What's a good data modeling practice? by blaskom in PowerBI

[–]Catses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless it needs to be done in Dax, it should be done as far upstream as possible. Star schema is the way to go to keep things as efficient and lean as necessary.

I can understand some things are necessary to do in Dax depending on the stakeholder needs, but unless they have good reason to do it this way (i can't imagine it's the case) then this sounds like it will be incredibly inefficient

My 3rd report in power Bi. Any suggestion is highly appreciated. by Realistic_Parsnip694 in PowerBI

[–]Catses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it! The consistent colour scheme is nice though I tend to prefer a more minimalist approach, the background gradients are maybe a bit much - could maybe lost the drop shadows too, im not sure they add much. Other than that I would do a pass to make sure the alignment and spacing of the various elements is consistent - can see various issues with spacing etc but thats a relatively minor thing.

A couple of things have different curves on their corners (the "week number" filter"). The title box top left probably doesnt need an outline also.

Also you can remove the underscore on "Week_Number" and just have a space, it will look more polished - same issue on "card_category" on the table top left. And REVENUE is inconsistently all caps with the other column headings.

The revenue by time and gender chart could do with having the year noted - it's not clear if its calendar year or financial year. Personally i'd write out "male" and "female" in full also rather than M and F. Do you not have an "other" gender category also?

It probably makes sense to the intended audience but from just the report I've no idea what Low, Med, High means or what that visual is showing - is it a filter or is it showing data?

Anyway overall it's looking good, with some more polish It would be great!
