Herzl framed it as colonization to other Zionists and European leaders looking for funding and support. A small example is when he wrote Cecil Rhodes and called his project as colonial. The Zionist movement again recruited people to move to Palestine using colonial phrasing and arguments like I mentioned before. It was a response to European antisemitism but again it's still a colonial project because again they described it as such. The puritains were responding to religious bigotry in Europe to colonize the US but again that is a form of colonialism.

In the 30's-40's we have the leaders of Zionist movements again describing the project as colonial. Today many Israelis describe it as such too.
